my late 99 f350 has been trouble free for many years, but this morning it started and after 5 seconds quit.it did that about ten times before I started troubleshooting.I dug thru all my tech papers I downloaded and cannot find a wiring schematic to trouble shoot the idm to injector circuit.does anyone have a link? so far this is what I have found, codes are 1316 and 0470
I never replaced cam sensor, so I did that just to use the one that has been in glove box for years
I need to clean the tube that goes down to exhaust manifold, that code has been there for awhile
the 1316 points to idm,. I only have a ohm meter and connot get the other codes inside idm so I unplugged injector harness and started there.
ohmed vc harness at top of valve covers all injectors are the same at 3 ohms.
when it starts, it sounds great for 5 seconds then tries to run on a few cylinders and then dies. it does this every time. starts like it is fixed and then kicks out to die. any suggestions? and where is the IDM?

Easiest way is to get it scanned with something that will pick up the ICM stored codes. That will at least get you a starting point. If you get good continuity across injector coils, that kind of points to the IDM. It's behind the F350 emblem in front of the driver's door. You have to pull the fender liner back to get to it.

thanks for responding

I use to live in fairbanks . the coldest 12 years of my life, you have my deepest sympathies:lol:!!! I too am thinking it is the idm. I am 70 miles from the dealer, too far to tow.I thought I would test the wires from idm to harness plug but need schematic?? Dieselmanns page was very helpful. any ideas for links to schematic?

No need for sympathy. I live in the banana belt (at least if you ask someone from the interior).

If you're just trying to check for continuity, just follow the colors.

Common feed to passenger bank is orange
Return from FI#1 is tan
Return from #3 is brown/yellow
Return from #5 is tan/black
Return from #7 is tan/red

Common feed to driver's side bank is pink/yellow
Return from #2 is white
Return from #4 is brown/lt blue
return from #6 is lt green/orange
return from #8 is lt blue

Check the harness where it goes across the valve cover. The injector circuits are on the bottom of the bundle and the first to chafe and short out.

You might check locally and see if someone has a PSD capable scan tool. Ford doesn't have a monopoly on them. There might even be a TDS member nearby with AutoEnginuity. Check the Help Network here: Power Stroke Help Network - 1994-1997 Power Stroke FAQ
