I'm about to pull my heads and need to remove the intake manifold, can this be done with the turbo left attached to the intake (Banks Sidwinder)? Or is it more trouble than it is worth?

Thanks.

Your are going to have to remove the turbo some time as you will have to replace the valley pan gasket (intake manifold gasket) they are a one piece, one time use. It is a crush gasket, hence one time use, normally ruined anyhow when the head is removed. AutoZone has them for $47 bucs last time I got one . Head gaskets also. They are Fel-Pro gaskets. Exhaust gaskets usually can be used over again. Are you going to pull the engine, or just do the heads in the truck ? The heads weigh 85 - 95 lbs. better have an engine hoist or some kind of hoist to remove them. There is a round dowel about 5/8" dia. on each end of the head towards the intake made of sheet metal, they can be ruined easily. Don't scar the head/block surfaces trying to break it loose. The rear head bolt by the firewall will not come out all the way, but far enough that you can wrap some tape on it to hold it up, if you are doing the heads in truck. Have fun & good luck.
And don't forget the bolt on the end of the intake that goes into the head, ground wire's fasten to it. The valley pan is held down by the firewall end by what looks like a drain hole, which it is, I think that unscrews with a 3/8" extension.

Thanks for the input.

I'm going to pull both heads completely out and have them re-built (or exchange for rebuilt). I plan on getting a "top end gasket" set from Fel-Pro which will replace everything I touch (head, valley/intake, exhaust, and valve covers). I always find it funny how you mention the word "diesel" and prices seem to double. I've been finding prices of over $100 just for the Fel-Pro gasket set. I'll definitely spend the money on the good stuff as I don't want to have to do this again in the near future.

Thanks.
