Interior upgrades, how to attach to roof on inside

anyone attach accessories to the roof on the inside of the van...through the headliner?
I'm wanting to make some custom storage bins and also attach some LED gooseneck lights in the back.
can you only screw things to the support crossmembers?
is the roof itself single layer or double layer?
i'm guessing i'll only be able to screw directly to the crossmembers, unless i run intermediate metal strips in between each cross member.
i just dont want to penetrate my roof with a misplaced screw.

i'm estimating i'll be safe with probably #8 3/4" screws, screwed into the crossmembers.
anyone done anything like this?

thanks

And if you DO put screws into the cross members, Remember that if you walk or kneel around on the roof right over that screw it will likely show up as a dent. Hopefully you don't stand right next to it or it might just pop through the roof. If your roof is completely covered with an insulating ceiling liner package" you absolutely should pull some down and take a look so you can see just what the cross members look like or better yet, find a van without the liner and take a quick look. Better to know what you are dealing with for thickness. And there's a BUNCH of holes already in the cross members so don't be surprised if a screw doesn't hit metal and just falls back out. Unless you go through to the roof!!!! DDT
