It has been brought to my attention that since I will be R&R my tranny it would be a good time to do my up pipes. I am thinking I will be going with the International bellowed up pipes. From what I have read I will need to buy the Turbo re-install kit. Is there anything else I will need to get this done:read:?

justin, how hard of a job is this to do with the transmission in? I need to change my uppipes as well as the turbo orings and delete the ebpv

If you have never worked on the up-pipes before here is a great article on how to do it from guzzle's web site: Welcome to Pocket's International UP-Pipe Replacement Web Page and another from RiffRaff's website: http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/mm5/RESOURCES/Riffraff_Diesel_Bellowed_Up-Pipe_Instructions.pdf. Plan on spending most of the day or more depending on problems you might run into. Clearance and getting to the nuts and bolts is the biggest problem you'll have. Have some extra long 3/8" extensions available...you'll need them. It helps to have an extra hand too. It is not easy but doable with the transmission in place. You are smart by going with the bellowed up-pipes...trust me you don't want to do this job again. :thumbsup:

I just pulled the trigger on the Up pipes. I went ahead and got the fuel crossover system as well since I have been looking at that pretty hard too. Dieselorings.com had free shipping which I like so I went with them. I talked to Bob and he said it will ship out tomorrow. He also told me that with the trany out I should not need to pull the turbo so he said I would not need the turbo reinstall kit. Looks like my truck project list just got longer :icon_wink:

Bob is correct...if you are pulling the transmission and not doing the EBPV delete you don't have to pull the turbo. I thought you said you were doing the EBPV delete...my bad. Get used to it...if money is no object...these truck have lots of mods you can do to them. :thumbsup:

It is about 10x harder to do with the transmission in place, and will take you 10x as long. I have done 2 separate trucks with the transmission in place, and debated on just dropping the trans about halfway through the job. It is 100% possible to do with the trans in, but the amount of extensions you need and the angles you have to be in are just crazy. If you take the trans out, just do it then.

I didnt have too bad a time doing it with the trans in, however I did have the entire exhaust yanked out to switch it to an MBRP, so that did give some extra room. Also lucked out and had the bolts all let go without too much fighting on the old pipes. Imagine it will be cake with the trans out though.

Up-pipes done. Not to bad with the transmission out of the way. hardest part was the top bolt on the passenger side. My 4" exhaust was blocking that one pretty good. Ended up using about 3" of extensions and went through the wheel well.

I sure hope not. I can't imagine trying to do it with the transmission in place. That brings up another thing I hope I wont have to do again. That transmission is just plain heavy. I am having the hardest time getting enough clearance with it on a jackstand. I had my rear passenger wheel up a good 10" off the ground and it was still a no go. I ended up putting some plywood on my driveway and set the tranny down on it and slid it under the truck. Got the jack under there and have the tranny halfway on it:icon_mad: I am going to try to get at it again in the morning:icon_mad:

This is one of those times you probably wished you had a shop change it out for you. When it comes time for me to have my transmission replaced/rebuilt I am taking it to a shop to do. This transmission weighs approximately 300 lbs. More than I want to mess with under the truck.

I've got to do this sometime in the near future. Thanks to everyone for posting their experiences.
I replaced my turbo outlet pipe a few months ago and saw the passenger side up pipe had a slight leak.

It is doable but not a 5 minute job...at least for me it wasn't. :no: Just plan for the worst and you'll do find. :thumbsup:
