I'm new to the forum but I've picked up some useful info. I recently picked up a 91 F350 with 7.3 and AT. It has 197,000 miles on it. The truck has been starting fine when cold but won't start once it is warmed up. If I let it sit for a couple of hours it starts. The other morning it fired up, ran for about 10 seconds and then died. Wouldn't start again. I looked through the forum and did some troubleshooting. I was getting fuel to the IP but when I checked at the injectors no fuel. I had power to FSS but didn't hear an audible click. I turned on the ignition and tapped the FSS lightly with a hammer and it fired up. I've started it a dozen times since then but reluctant to rely on it. It even seems to fire up when warm now. I'm assuming it's a sticky solenoid?? Is it possible to replace or clean the FSS or does it only come with a new IP or could it be the IP anyway???? (I couldn't find the FSS online anywhere) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If this IP was the OEM install then it could be worn out or close to it. A worn IP will usually start cold, but will not start regularly when hot. IE a coffee stop, shut it off hot, get a coffee to go and it will not restart..... at least until it cools down.

As for 10 seconds run then shutdown, that could be air leak into the system causing a drain off of fuel... starts then runs out of fuel in the IP due to an air leak..... requires some cranking to re prime the IP.

A bad connector/connection or worn out FSS may be responsible for the coming alive when tapped.... They are a few $$$$.. However the FSS when powered up just withdraws from holding the metering valve closed . If the metering valve is sticky and stays closed....then it will not allow fuel into the IP.

If you would like a TSB on the governor cover removal..... Top of the IP with the FSS attached. PM me your email addy.... just click on my name and follow the link. Ask for the TSB IP.
