When driving at about 65-70 mph i run about 1800-2100 rpm but sometimes when going up steep inclines the cruise will drop the trans into 3rd gear and the rpms skyrocket to 3000+ rpm. Always catches me off guard and scares the sht out of me. Is this something I should be worried about?

Unless you have aftermarket programming or a chip in the PCM there is a govoner that will kick in around 3400 RPM's if I remember right and you can hold the engine speed right at that point for as long as you want with no problems

Im definitely curious if there is a rev limiter. But rev-ing over 2800 just sounds scary to me but im sure its fine. Maby one day ill feel brave and floor it to see if there is a limit

I hit it right after I bought my truck. I dropped it out of fifth gear and hit fourth while passing a truck on a two lane truck.

When it hit the limiter I about crapped my pants and thought that I had smoked the engine.

Never again

One of the Ford-approved tests (I think for oil aeration) is to hold the accelerator to the floor for 2 minutes in neutral.

Mine is a 99. In 99 it downshifting while pulling a 5th wheel camper up an incline and I thought a fighter jet was landing beside me it sounded so loud. Got home and called Diablo Power Chips. The tech told me under a load like that it could possibly shear the water pump shaft with a downshift like that (not sure if that's true or not) but I ordered a chip and haven't had that problem again.

[/QUOTE performance chips do help but they do sky rocket egts. If you dont have a egt gauge I recommend getting one. Glow shift makes a 3-1 digital gauge that has egt , boost and a trans temp sensor. I really like it as it dosent take up much space and it looks stock

I pull a fiver RV with F250. When going up inclines, especially LONG ones, i turn cruise control off, use foot control. I drive like egg between foot and gas petal. I noticed when doing long climbs, boost increases, with oil, water and tranny fluid temperatures increases. Not to mention the extra load imposed on the engine bearings. I found I could slow down, watch temperatures while going uphill, seek a speed where HH fluid temperatures do rise, seek stability of temperature at a reasonable towing speed.

Know of other owners who use cruise control while towing, let er rip going uphill, and suffered blown engine. I can afford to slow down, but not a blown engine. Especially if truck is a 2011 model, with many of the known faults by Ford at play.
