Have been using Mobil 1 in the transmission and transfer case since first change at about 50k. Truck has 125k on it now. Just changed it again. Looked new and oil sample indicated quite a bit more life left in lube.

You have probably been using the older Mobil 1 ATF that's rated Mercon only, not Mercon/Mercon V which is what they've changed it to.

I think the problem with Mercon V or Multi-rated ATF is the clutches in the auto trannies. AFAIK, there shouldn't be anything like that in the transfer case (or 6-speed) that should be affected, but I'm not sure.

It would be interesting to see what a newer owner's manual says about Mercon/Mercon V or Mercon V in the t-case and manual trannies.

Kevin, you are correct, the problem with the dual rated fluid is with the clutch packs in the autos. The syncronizers(brass) are not affected in any way by a dual-use fluid, and it still provides the same lubrication to the bearings and gears. The dual-use can also be used the transfer cases and power steering systems without harm. I have been running the Amsoil universal ATF in both trans & transfer case in my 99 for over 2 years/35k miles with no problems.

I posted in another topic here three days ago, and there was a similar confusion about the dual-usage fluids in the manuals and other systems.

buddy, so your saying it is ok to use Mobil 1 (mercon/mercon V) in transfer case, power steering, tranny? You said the problem is with the clutch packs, If this is a problem, then why are you running it in your trans?

Sorry about the confusion, my 99 truck is a manual transmission, so it is OK to use the Mercon/Mercon V fluid. For my 2001, which has the automatic, I ordered Amsoil's Torque-Drive, which only carries the Mercon rating.

[/ QUOTE ]So I think I will order some amsoil torque drive for my power steering and transfer case. Do you know where I could purchase it from? It sucks that I can no longer purchase synthetic ATF from the local autozone, kragen, etc.. I guess everything will have to be done online.

Give Bob Riley a call at Dieselsite. He is a Amsoil dealer and also a site sponsor. He is also a great guy to deal with.

I just looked at the amsoil site and wow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifEach quart comes out to $10 dollars including tax and shipping. What a deal. I think I will order a hundred! And I thought gas was high /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I've been running Mobil-1 ATF (Mercon/Dexron-III rated) in my 6-speeder and
transfer case since I had 15K on the clock. Now have 45K on the clock.
A few months ago I started reading about the dual-rated Mobil-1 ATF and so
I started looking around the stores here to see what was on the shelves.
At that time only the old Mercon/Dexron-III rated Mobil-1 ATF -- so I
bought several more quarts of the stuff. Then about a month ago my
local/yocal Bi-Mart discount store got some of the dual-rated Mobil-1 ATF
on its shelf. I carefully looked behind the front bottles and found five
more quarts of the old stuff, so I bought them... Went to another
Bi-Mart store and all they had was the new dual-rated stuff... Then I
stopped at Autozone and by gollie they had 11-quarts of the old stuff.
Bought all 11-quarts! Now have 34-quarts on the shelf in the shop...
That should last me awhile... Especially since I just put a tranny
ATF filter on the 6-speeder...

Anyway, if you look around at your local stores you may still find some of
the old Mobil-1 synthetic Mercon/Dexron-III rated ATF around... Check
carefully at the back of the shelves!

FYI, Royal Purple has a MERCON synthetic ATF. It is called "Royal Purple Max ATF". It is not the MerconV we need to avoid in our automatic transmissions. I just did my trans this weekend with it. I used some dyno. MERCON ATF to flush out the power steering pump.
