I've got a Titan 47 gallon tank on the way for my truck. Other than doing the harpoon mod while the tank is out, what opinions do you have on the ITP fuel tank, pre-pump kit?

I think the Air dog kit may be more comprehensive, but I don't want to spend that much right now.

I guess I'm asking if its a worthwhile mod, especially since the tank will be down.

Thoughts?

Good kit, I helped my buddy install one in his '01 7.3. The hardest part is dropping the tank.

You'll get at least four things out of this, and all are good:

- Fix the air injection problems with the fuel pickup (ITPs fuel tank mod aka "Hutch" mod)
- Replace the vacuum leaky quick disconnects at the tank and the input to the pump; replace with SAE J30R9 fuel hose, should come standard in the ITP kit, check when you buy.
- Harpoon mod, may or may not apply to the Titan tank
- Adds a pre-pump filter to your fuel system. This is definitely good since the 7.3's only have one fuel filter.

Good luck.

I just put mine in last weekend. The harderst part, like said above, was dropping the tank. I have a skid loader and used my forks to get underneath.
It was a really fun install other than the tank and the tank really isn't that hard to do. The kit is well put together and easy to install. I THINK the truck is running a little quieter but can't really tell much difference yet. The instructions say that you need to run through a tank of fuel to push most of the air out of the system and I'm getting close to that point.
For my piece of mind adding the extra filter made the entire thing worth while. I'm ready to add the regulated return when I have the money.

I did the "Hutch" mod before anyone had a kit. From my past experence, any kit that is purchased from ITP is priced right and is top quality. I think of all the mods I've done to my truck, the "Hutch" mod has been the most significant. Second is the Sonnax valve, tricumulator spring mod for the tranny. Both are around $50 each.

All in all, you will be removing the stock filter and having an external filter. That means that if you get crap in the tank (I removed the one at the foot), it will go straight to the pump AFTER the filter that is external. So, without that, your in tank filters can clog up which makes you have to drop it and order parts to fix it. Where will it happen? In your driveway? Unlikely. In the middle of BFE? Probably. So, what is that worth to you?

The 7.3 has the tank screen at the pick-up tube and the stock OEM fuel filter sits on top of the engine.

The ITP mod doesn't do anything to remove the tank screen, it stays, unless someone decides to remove it; my friend chose not to, and I recommend no one remove their screen either.

The pre-pump fuel filter mod puts a fuel filter in front of the fuel pump between the tank and the fuel pump. It protects the fuel pump with a 12 micron nominal fuel filter rated for 10-12 gpm.

In other words, the 7.3 fuel system becomes far more robust, not less.

I decided to remove the screen myself. Also the ITP kit removes the mixing chamber which has filters in it. When those clog, you have to drop the tank. Right now, anything in the tank goes straight to the pre-pump filter.

My mixing chamber is gone and so are the screens. A 30 micron Racor filter and water remover is in front of the fuel pump. I love the setup and with my truck, the removal of the air in the fuel, reduced the engine noise a lot.

I found a few more links on the kit, and went ahead and ordered it up. Since I'll have the tank down to change it, its a good time to fix other things. Thanks for the help.
