so i just got my tunes from eric at innovative and i have the xtreme street and race and then the just plain street all i am running right now the the plain street tune and i have not even loaded the other two in my truck because i have read the horror stories about head bolts and the egr so my questions are
can i replace the head bolts with new arp head studs with the cab on?
can i send the egr cooler on a vacaation and replace it with the cab on?
my dealer around here CAN NOT and WILL NOT replace and OEM parts with aftermarket parts( Which measn i will be doing this job by myself in my own shop) can i put the head studs in with out pulling the heads and just do them one by one or do the heads have to come off. i have olny been runing the tunes for like 2 days and i have no problems as of yet and i am considering pulling the tune back out until i complete the following any help form people who have done this upgrade themselves would be very much appericated. oh and i do have knowledge with motors i have been around diesel motors and heavy equipment my whole life so i know that will kinda of be a plus

Is it possible to install head studs with the cab on ? Yes.
Is it the right way to do it? No

If you were to go about replacing them one by one, it means you will not be replacing the headgasket, which in my opinion is the wrong way to do it. If you have already been running tunes, you may have started to warp heads, and really the best way to go about installing studs is to remove the cab, have the heads checked, install a new gasket and re-install with the studs.

Now, Ive had my 06 now for a month, and its been fine without studs. Ive beat on it with extreme street tunes, and everything. No problems here yet....I installed studs anyway....but....If you really monitor the temps and boost levels closely you shouldnt have any problems with the 05 and new 6.0s...Now if your really worried about it, or if you dont want to worry about it anymore, go ahead and pull the cab off and replace the bolts with the studs....Sure it will take a bit longer but the peace of mind will be worth it...

As for the egr.....Im going to be buying a kit, I think its called a "sneaky pipe" which Ive heard is pretty effective, it basically acts as a block off kit rather than a "delete" kit.Good luck!

i have a 03 and i really have no lifts in my shop so i have no way to lift the cab. my local ford dealer tells me they replace head gaskets without pullin the cab and i've been told by other people that you can do it. this is not true? i love my tuner and i want to keep it but i want to do the wokr before i warp my head and stuff i would like to prevent this from happening

Ive always heard that you can install studs by pulling out the old bolts one by one...But anytime you do this you are going to be unseating the head gaskets. I think that the correct way of doing it is lifting the cab. But it is possible to do without lifting. Hopefully someone thats actually done it will chime in....Good luck!

If you have a picker you could just pull the engine the traditional way, its not that much harder. Thats how they did mine.

I asked the same question on 2-2-09 some guys on here told me that you can do it with the cab on. Try to search it maybe you'll find it so you can see what they said.

I put studs in my 05 Ex "over the fender" in my driveway. I used a cherry picker and a bracket for the heads I bought from here SPX Motorcraft | Welcome to SPX Motorcraft .
I had never been close to being this deep into any engine. But with this forum and forums like this there are plenty of "resources" to get things apart and back together again. You will have to remove the A/C condensor thing on the passenger side to get to the rear passenger head bolts. I had a special "socket" welded for the driver side bottom rear stud and used a torque wrench extension calculator to the correct torque on the nuts. Here is a pic of the extension.

I did this completely by myself (short of my wife and friend pushing/pulling the cherry picker while I guided the heads in/out), it took me about 3 months as I work for Uncle Sam and am gone alot and I was doing alot of other things while I was in there that required waiting on parts, sending parts back cause I got the wrong ones, double and triple checking how to do certain things and in what order on the forums, etc. This is however completely doable. Hope this helps

Some people I have seen do it say it takes just as long if not longer to do it with the cab on, so dont do it that way because you think it will be faster....

well i think i'm gonna search around here but it sounds like the eeasiest way is to pull the cab i mean it cant be that hard some brake lines,4 bolts and unplug some plugs but i will prolly have to use the backhoe or excavator to lift it as i do not have a lift but i got plenty of straps

Doing HG and Studs with cab on

Replacing the head gasket and studs with the cab on is easy! I did mine in about 18hrs the only trick is you have to pull the ac condenser coil which means that you have to evacuate the refrigerant. Besides that my only recommendation is get one of those stools that attaches to the tire or a good step stool. A ford manual is not a bad idea either.

i helped my friend do his with the cab on, it was kind of a pain but doable. i know of quite a few people running erics extreme power setting on stock head gasket and bolts so far none of them have had a problem. doing them one at a time with the head on kind of defeats the purpose since you should put another head gasket on while you have the heads off right?
