I just finish putting in the remaned motor ,it started right up after filling the fuel filter . Runs for about one min really good then dies Then it starts back up after cranking it over a bit , step on the go pedal and it revs right up then runs for a while and dies. This is the first 7.3 i have ever installed and have checked everything i can think of. When it dies it sounds as if it is not getting fuel ! But the injector pump is full . Are there any pre start up rules im not following ? do you have to bleed anything ? I have a running truck with a 7.3 in it i can take parts off to try . any help would be grate thanks

Rob, something you posted made me think you were putting fuel in the High Pressure Oil Pump reservoir. If you did that, it's the wrong thing to do. It would just dilute your oil with fuel.

The "Injector Pump" on a 7.3 L is actually an oil pump that sends high pressure oil to unit injectors that are little hydraulic pumps. Like tattoocharlie said, air in the oil system will cause problems running, but I've never heard of one just dying from that. They usually just run like crap for a while.

Check to make sure that you're getting fuel (is the filter filling when you turn on the key?). Also, if the HPOP reservoir isn't staying full, then you may not be getting oil picked up by the low pressure oil pump to fill the reservoir.

There is no injector pump. There is only a fuel pump.
Do you have a fuel filter in the cannister? Be sure you do, otherwise, no fuel will pass the cannister. Can you check fuel pressure?

The HPOP is the high pressure oil pump. It serves the same purpose as a "injector pump."

Woops i ment i primed the fuel filter and yes its geeting fuel in the filter . And after it dies i open the drain and diesel sprayes out the bottom of the truck so its filling as it uses it .( Also, if the HPOP reservoir isn't staying full, then you may not be getting oil picked up by the low pressure oil pump to fill the reservoir.) will this cause it to stall ???

Yes, lack of oil in the HPOP reservoir will cause stalling. You can check it by pulling the plug on the top of the reservoir (just in front of the fuel filter) and seeing if it's within 1" of the top. If not, fill it up, and see if it will stay running. If you continue to refill the HPOP res, though, you'll have an overfilled crankcase. If it doesn't stay full (and running) after a couple of refills, then you've got a problem with picking up oil from the pan.

not sure about the sensor, but i had my hpop replaced and aparently the dealership used the wrong gasket which allowed the oil to drain down(at least thats what i was told),that caused my truck to start and run rough,or sometimes not at all.so check the oil level in the hpop, make sure its full also keep in mind theres quite a bit of air in a new system.

also the way the mechanic explained it to me around 2000-2001 is when the gasket design changes.keep in mind im not a diesel expert(yet)but after the gasket change, smooth as silk.
