No Start...Help

I am new to the diesels, been rebuilding and fixing gas burners for years, so I took on my first diesel build, she's all back together, no start. the truck is a 96 f350 7.3 turbo, had no fuel to the fuel bowl, so i pressurized the tank, removed the schrader valve and finally got fuel there. Opened up the hpop rails on the heads, got oil coming out there. Cracked open the banjo bolts on the back of the heads, fuel running out there. Filled the fuel filter housing with diesel as well. Is this common, are these engines hard to start prime up, or start after a build. Any information would be helpful. Am I missing something here. BTW, reason for the rebuild, compressions all over the place, excessive ring blow-by, leaking timing and oil pan covers. As said, any tips tricks, or prayers would be wonderful
Thanks Jay

Did you fill the oil reservoir on the top of the motor? It's oil fired injection so it has to be full. It's the little plug on the top of it.mine is a allen wrench fitting. It could be that It just needs alot more crancking too.

Thanks for the reply, I did fill it almost to the top, it is bound to be pumping oil because the oil rails in the heads were completely dry to start with, then i removed one plug from each head and they both were full, running out. I hope it needs more cranking, but I really hate cranking excssively on a fresh new engine, i worry about the bearings. I will double check the hpop housing to make sure it is full. the battery voltage is getting down to around 10.0, so I am going to charge them for a while.
Thanks again Jay

Don't worry about cranking it over too much. When I rebuild a gas motor I purposely unhook the fire to the motor and keep cranking it over. The reason for that is so that the oil going through the oil pump goes completely throughout the engine. The more it gets cranked over the more oil I know is circulating through the bearings.try shooting a little WD40 in your air cleaner followed by a shot of ether, just to make sure its firing.I had to do it to mine when I took everything of of the top down to the heads. The WD40 will protect the top end when you use the ether.Though most people will tell you It is hard on your motor, wich it is.Sometimes you have to go to extreme measures for a fast and efficient result.wish you luck, yukonjon

I would advise not to use ether on a freshly rebuilt motor! If you do want to do that, make sure the glowplugs are disabled. JMHO & Cheers!
