KBB is a valid referance as far as private party sales go. Dealers tend to put more weight on what the vehicles are bringing at the auctions. On vehicles that new it can actually be cheaper to purchase new rather then used since dealers can offer better incentives and financing on new then they can on used.
For example my 02 Ranger booked at only $2000 less then what I could have purchased an 04 for (after discounts and rebates) when I traded it.
