I was trying to drive past a car today with a kickdown but the transfer only shifted from third to second, third to second, third to second to third again and did not accelerate at all, nothing was happening..... I was doing about 70 kmh when this happend, but later I tried it in 80 kmh and 60kmh and the same goes here too, the tranny just "flicks" down a gear and up again and nothing or very little happens with the speed of the truck...

Maybe it has something to do with what happend when I first started to drive today. The tranny felt like it was in some sort of recovery mode with the overdrive kicking in just before 80 kmh and RPM really high before every shift (the OD usually kicks in around 60-70 kmh, depense how hard I'm on the trottle when I'm accelerate from zero to 80 kmh...) It shifted really harsh and hard, but I got rid of that after I put copper paste on the connectons of the tacho, the FIPL and the other connection under the truck, beside the tranny, so thats OK now, but I'm still has that kickdown problem....

Anyone have had this problem before? I have to replase the drive knot, it is really worn out and I thought it maybe have something with this to do with it? The drive shaft is shaking bad sometimes "between the gears", so to speak..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Best regards from Norway!

Is your RPM gauge showing signs of problems or not working at all? My E40D had many of the same problems you have listed. When I bought my truck, the RPM gauge did not work and the Trans. was doing weird shifts, hard, slipping and etc thus the reason I got such a good deal on it. In time I wanted to fix the RPM gauge becuase I like having it. Upon replacing the RPM sensor, the gauge started working and almost all the transmission problems went away. After I replaced the radiator and flushed the entire engine cooling system, the small remaining trans prolems went away by giving the trans better cooling. I am even getting much better miles per gallon. This truck now shifts and runs better than the family car.

When the tach sensor goes bad it will cause the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) to lock and unlock rapidly around 40 - 50 mph. This will give the feeling of the trans shifting. Pushing the OD lockout button will often eliminate most of the symptom.

I PM'd HPSkoug and asked if he has replaced tires recently, his answer was yes........for a larger size. I feel this may be part of the problem since the info from the speed sensor will not be accurate. Thus false info is sent to the PCM then to the trans....

So my question is how much larger tire are we talking here...???

Will he need to do a speedo gear change.......??

My winther tires is size 215/75R16 and my sommer tires is size 245/75R16.... You think this might be the problem? What solves this? Disconnecting the batteries for a while or something like that?

Modest tire size changes shouldn't make a difference to the transmission. Shifting is based on engine RPM, load and driveshaft RPM (speed). The trans will just shift at a higher or lower actual road speed.

Have you pulled and tested the tach sensor yet?

BTW, a 215/75R16 is a rather low tire, and you are likely losing fuel economy because of it. A 215/85R16 is a very common size and is closer to the right height for your truck.

Yes, I have pulled the tach sensor and it messured 2800 ohms, its ok I think. On the winther tires I usually go slow anyhow, so the fuel economy isn't that big issue... Anyway, the speedometer is reading 60 kmh when I do 60 kmh on my sommer tires, I've mesured it. Thanks for all info so far, help alot.
