I want 200A or more, and a lifetime or so warranty. I keep frying stockers (lots of accessory draw, primarily the inverter which can pull as much as 400A!)

What is the best quality that will NEVER leave me stranted again?

I am thinking you may want to go with a PTO generator, either that or look into DB electric I understand they have some great products look here http://www.db-starter-alternator.com/

There was a post recently in these forums about the alternators that the RED CROSS used in their emergency response vehicles. They used these to power radio communications etc.

AURA

Original thread is here.

Well, either that huge BAMBULANCE alt, or maybe the DB will do the job for ya, I have the 200A one.
SO far I couldn't be much happier..

Are you look as your batts as the possible casue. A bad cell? Are you fully charging them before you install the alt. I made that mistake about 10 times in my TA before someone told me to make sure the batts are fully charged

In all honesty, I believe Wrangler makes some of the best. They actually have parts machined for their alternators so they will have a better fit and tighter tolerances. That alternator/ generator that horses mentioned is nice as well.

I'm installing my DB 7796 200A this weekend or next if I get rained out. I bought mine in March though on their Ebay listing back before the price tag jumped to $249 from $189. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

LOL, actually been thinking of driving up to San Antonio and trying to talk QtrHorse into installing it for me for a 12 pack /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif since he seems to be the only electrical wiz I know within driving distance, LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif (Rudy, check your PMs this afternoon,/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif,seriously not about this)

[/ QUOTE ]I have the WranglerNW alternator and they were pricey two years ago but now they are stratospheric. Further they only have a 1 year warranty. At that price point, they should be warranted for a lifetime. Mine has been flawless. Spin that pulley and it feels like it is on roller bearings.

Yes, they are crazy w/ their pricing. I would have a hard time paying $600 for an alternator.

Another option would be this alternator but I believe the cost to be around $300.

This alternator looks to be a beast.

I thought you installed that thing already. Bring it on down and we can get it taken care of for you.

One comment on your inverter usage. You should be buffering the current (for lack of a better term) by having the inverter running off a deep cycle battery (6volt golf cart batteries are the best) and then running a charge line to those batteries. You should not be running your inverter directly from the truck alternator system. It can't handle the current draw.

Yeah, that baby looks to solve the problem.

I don't understand the 6volt deep cycle golf car battery being used on a 12v system. How's that work to help an inverter?

I smoke an alternater once a year on the Excursion, I have a lifetime warranty one from Checkers, they just keep replacing it. I run my laptop through an inverter on vacation once a year. My kids watch movies. I wasn't thinking i was doing anything to overwork the alt. Am I?

That is exactly what I am doing, I have another bank of batteries that run off a charge line (that can be broken by my battery combiner/splitter) that is only 'refreshed' from the alternator.

My alt is also a 60A (configured, it will make over 200A~!) charger as well, and I always charge the batts if seriously depleted with the inverter (not the alt.)

Interesting, wonder if it will fit a 7.3? Might hit the CAC tubes. Only one way to find out I suppose /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Heck, I can change them now in about 8 minutes, at 13* outside! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif
Hope I don't have to mess with it again for a LONG time.

But will it fit with a dual alt upper radiator hose mod? I know my slightly beefier than stock large case doesn't have but a little space between the alt case as the dual alt upper hose.

Maybe that's why Ford went with a through-the-belt upper hose for the single alts? Should a larger alternator be fitted.

Golf cart batteries are rated at a much high amp hour capacity, but are 6volt DC. 2 in series gives you the 12vdc needed and a high amp hour run cycle.

I'm sure there would need to be some grinding or washer adding to make that HO alternator from AlternatorParts.com fit our trucks. I had to grind down my alternator bracket to make my large cas alternator fit. There was a company some time ago that I believe sold either that alternator or one that was similar in size and the install kit included a two pc CAC tube so it would fit properly. Someone buy it and let us know. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
