Your comments and write-ups on the 4R-100 transmission are interesting, informative & enlightening. Printed a lot of it out for future reference ... but now the future is here.

Just completed a 6000 mile trip to East Coast & back towing our 25' travel trailer. It was fun & good except for the 3 tire blowouts on the trailer the last 2 days of the trip. 5 new tires corrected that problem.

The last 50 miles had me on the edge of my seat because of EGTs (1200 degrees for 2-3 minutes) and TRANSMISSION temps. (220 degrees for maybe 10 minutes) Pulling the mountain out of Vegas to Pahrump was the longest, hard pull of the whole trip & it was 112 degrees outside!

The FIX: Run my programmer in the Tow-Safe mode instead of Performance and upgrade to the 26 row 6.0 trans cooler. Ordered mine yesterday from AutoNation Ford (formerly Tousley) ... They're great! I mistakenly ordered the 31 row but Mike quickly changed to the 5C3Z-7A095-CA unit before the part was shipped.

I'm going by "woodnthings8's" excellent write-up. My problem is: Where to get the 1/2" transmission fluid rated hose at some reasonable price. O'Reillys here in Pahrump will order it for me @ $15 per foot. I know it's precious, but it's not gold.

Any suggestions?? I'd appreciate it.

Why not put the 31 row in? I just put one in my truck a few weeks ago when I put in my HD4r100 and it really seems to keep the temps down. I got all my stuff (tranny, cooler, and some other parts) from Mike as well.

As far as the hose goes I got mine at Oreilly's my receipt shows 6ft at 3.49/ft Item number 27059

On second thought that may be different size line since I went with the 31 row. At any rate here is the stuff I used http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/GAT0/27059.oap?ck=Search_27059_-1_1687&keyword=27059

Mark Kovalsky, an expert whose opinion I respect highly, has tested the 31 & 26 row coolers and the results show approximately equal cooling. Even tho the 26 row is smaller, it is more efficient, according to Mark and others on this forum.

31 row price before shipping: $378.76
26 row price before shipping: $280.00

Gates 27059 hose is 3/8" i.d. and O'Reilly here in town priced it @ about the price mentioned above. The 1/2" i.d. hose that I want, they can get it for me in a day or two, but the price is an exorbitant price...over $15 a foot. I'm not buying that.

I have no criticism of the 31 row cooler ... it's a good one and was my original choice ... I just decided to do the 26 row.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.

The kit you linked to is definitely an option. I want to wait until my cooler comes before cutting lines, etc., then I'll know how much and how many of "what" I need. $18 shipping raises the kit price to almost $70. I'm weighing the convenience versus the cost. I have clamps and am considering making the hose splicers (3/8' x 1/2") from S/S round stock on my lathe. My SD is not my daily driver and I'm retired so I'm not pressed for time to get Big Red back on the road.

Thanks for the link.

You're right. I just discovered that, but the parts guy asked his manager why the big price and HE thought it was a per foot price too. When I'm ready for it I'll probably go back and talk to them.
