Gentlemen,

I have searched the forum and after reading many posts about the issue, I am still unsure as to problem. Perhaps some of your insight will help.

See sig for truck. I use the truck for carrying a camper on 3-4 few-day camping trips during the summer. Otherwise the the truck sits while I ride my motorcycle for cummuting. In the winter I will commute occasionally in the truck. Commute is 3 three miles each way. I guess what I am trying to say is that the truck sits for a good deal of the time.

So far just about every long trip 100+ miles that I go on, something happens. It is usually the following:

Truck runs great, then about 60 miles into a 180 mile trip, whiles ascending a hill, no power, can barely get 50 mph floored out of it even in tow/haul. Stayed this way for about 20 mins until I pulled over, shut it off waited a few minutes. Re started, back on highway. No immediate difference. Then I just got pissed and floored it. Turbo fart all over the place. Like I have never experienced before. Even at the slightest decel, fart fart fart everywhere. Then a couple minutes later I got my power back. 10 Minutes later, check engine light came on and stayed on for the remiander of the trip. Truck ran the rest of the trip flawlessly. I scanned it the next day using a predator, said "no codes found". I strated the truck and the CEL was out. Oh well.

I would like to take it to the dealer, but don't want to do it unless I can duplicate the problem. He has seen the truck for this problem before. They replaced VGT sensor, EGR valve.

Any thoughts on how I can duplicae this for the dealer?

Any comments welcome.

Your turbo vanes are sticking. I just got my truck back from having turbo #3 installed. I was having the same issues as you. Sitting around is not good for these engines. The service manager and tech that fixed my truck both told me the more these trucks sit, the more often they see them come in with turbo issues. Ford supposedly came out with a new, updated turbo that is said to have some type of coating on the turbo vanes that addresses the sticking issue. So I would suggest you take your truck in to have the turbo checked out.

Thanks for the replies folks. I am going to get it to the dealer and let them know of the updated turbo, and recall 06E17.

Where I am 200 miles from home, what are the consquences of running the truck when the turbo is acting up. Does it just decrease my milage or am I doing further damage?

Is there any means or method that I can employ to "unstick" the vanes if that is in fact the issue? WOuld accleerating hard for several times and backing off do this? (IE Causing excessive farting)

Thanks..

the only thing with the bad turbo i found, was the unpredictability of when mine would fail/stick. most the time it would be on the highway when i was in need of power to pass ,which imo could lead to a dangerous situation. the good thing is mine smoked so bad, everyone stayed away from me thinking i was going to explode or something. started out as a slight problem, getting worse with mileage. max speed i could get was 35-40 mph when it was in failure mode. currently in a breach of warranty suit, due to being at dealer for 30 plus days to diagnose, 2nd dealer fixed in 3 days..
you probally have some codes stored , and with tsb, service should be easy. good luck !!!!

i got to say. that sucks. i also have a 03 , but not had any problems like that. you should be able to let you truck sit with out it breaking down all by it self!!!
here is what i think the problem is... have you ever seen the EGR picture people post.. man they are coated in burnt oil. these truck pass a LOT of oil past though the crank case vent valve. and it dumps all this oil into the intake tube through the inter cooler into the intake and out the turbo. i think the turbo is getting burnt oil on it then when it sits for a while it gets hard and makes the VGT stick. i have seen were people on this site and other sites have done a mod to dump this oil into there exhaust pipe instead of the intake. i think i will do the same when i get a chance. OH one more think why does the dealer not clean the turbo and then put it back on..maybe coat it with PTFE or something. most of the turbo that get replaced are still good, just dirty . sound like a waste of money.
just my thoughts good luck

Went into the dealer this morning to get the new flash update, and to check for oil leaks on the engine again, on the way to dealer truck started to kick and buck, no power, black smoke. The result is engine has multiple leaks and needs to be pulled again, and the turbo is going bad and will have to be replaced. The good news is that warranty is still good but I am not happy that engine needs to be pulled for the second time to have seals and o rings replaced again. Only 57500 kms on 2003 truck. Engine was first pulled around 33000 kms. I find the new flash is giving me better mileage so far.

ME Again,

Just got home. Truck ran pretty well on the way home. A couple of times I lost turbo and I just accelerated hard and backed off acouple of times and the turbo came back. Didn't get the check engine linght until I was almost home, well after I lost turbo. I scanned it and got the usual two codes. P0306 (KAM error) and P2263 (Turbo system perfomance error). Not ready to give up my vacation yet. Going out tomorrow for few more days of camping, then next week it goes to the dealer. Too bad the 3 year warranty ran out a couple of weeks ago. I have had this problem EVERY time I take a long trip. They have replaced a few parts, but don't seem to get it right.

Sorry to hear of your engine pulls Redcoat...
