This is a 8 year old thread. The rear main seals on the 7.3 engine very seldom goes bad. Any oil leak up on the top of the engine which is very common will drain down the back of the engine and look like it is the rear main but it is usually a problem up on top.

I see that but I was trying to figure it out some oil was felt and some transmission fluid was seen and felt from the transmission shield by the lower corner of the bolt?

I'm not an auto tranny guy, but I'll bet a front seal on the tranny is more common than a rear main seal on a 7.3L. That's likely where the ATF is coming from.

[on edit] I consolidated responses to Rossi.C's post in an old thread, which is why the posts are out of order. Bugman's response was in that thread (now cleaned up).

Much appreciated and that would cause the trans fluid to drop out of that shield for the transmission?

Did you buy chance do a hard back up with a heavy trailer? This thread is all out of wack so I am trying to figure it out. Many years ago I had to back a very heavy trailer into a very tight area uphill the whole way. When I got done I had puked some trans fluid out of the inspection cover, freaked out about it at first. That was at least 10 years ago and never had a problem since. Just my experience. Put it in low range when backing up heavy loads. If yo have unlocking hubs it is even easier.
Oil mixed in with the trany fluid could be many different things. Most common come from up on top.

That is just a inspection cover for the flexplate/flywheel and really has nothing to do with the transmission.

You can pull it off and you might see better where the oil is coming from. As Kevin said it may be coming from the input shaft for the transmission.

As for the motor oil everything that leaks up on top of the engine will end up in that same area. There is a drain hole that allows fluids to drain down the back side of the engine and around the bell housing to the location that you are seeing the oil at.

I appreciate it I have the automatic hubs for 4x4. The oil is separate from the transmission fluid (like I stated before it’s coming through that inspection cover) have a couple pictures of it on here somewhere. I appreciate the time you are taking to respond. How did you fix your problem?

I just overheated my trans while backing up the heavy trailer. Truck had also just pulled that load around 50 miles up and down several mountains at highway and interstate speeds so the fluid was hot. I learned my lesson and I have never had the problem again and I have backed up much heavier trailers since. I also have auto lockers in that truck, I just have to watch how I back up in low range to keep from binding the drivetrain on hard pack. This was just my experience, you could have a front seal problem if it is happening while just normal driving.
For the oil, as others have stated, it is probably coming form up top of the motor. Look in the valley under the turbo. If you see any puddles of oil you need to look around the engine bay and see where you see fresh oil. You may need to clean the motor first let it dry and then start looking.

There is a hub lock out mod or something like that for automatics so that you can put the truck into 4 low without the front end kicking in so that you can backup in 4 low.

Problem is that it is in the stuff that is locked away since the forum downgrade but there may be something on it elsewhere

Thanks bugman I will look into the hub mod. I was always just going to put manual hubs on it, but just has never happened.

I posted a question about that mod in the 99 Engine and Drivetrain forum and Kevin came to the rescue.

This thread is a little bit of mumble jumble but look at post #15 for how to do it. I don't know where the hub solenoid is located at but at least it gets you going into the right direction.

Maybe I am confused but that is referring to the turn knob 4x4 in the 99+. I do not think it would help my floor shift 97. Would have helped me with my 04 V10 it needed all the help it could have gotten!

Do you have manual or automatic hubs? If automatic I am sure that there should be a way to disable them.

I'm a manual guy myself with a 5 speed and manual hubs, so I am learning also.

I have the autos. They have been on my list of things to replace for 13.5 years, but just have not been a big problem for me. I know others have had a lot of issues with them. They keep getting put off because other things need more attention. My 301K truck has warns (came on it when I got it) they are great. I have learned to just be careful when positioning the truck with a heavy trailer.

Are you talking about the engine lift point?

You have arrows and a circle on your picture. What exactly are you trying to do? If you do not have the factory lift point on the motor then you can simply bolt up another kind of mount or chain to remove the motor if you need to. As for the arrows if you do not have those parts, I think you are on the wrong section of this forum.
