My tranny is leaking at the penetration of the selector (or linkage, sorry, still learning many new-to-me terms).

NAPA said they had a "Shift shaft seal" for $5.49. My questions are twofold.
1) Does anyone know if this is right part? The clerk didn't seem too sure, and I don't know.

2) How difficult is the repair? Is it done from the outside, during a fluid change, or at a rebuild?

Thanks in advance for the help.

My manual show that the PNP switch is to be removed and the pan also. Some levers inside are removed, the old seal by slide hamer and the new seal dipped in trans fluid then installed using a special tool.(looks like any other seal install tool) There is some special info re internal parts placement and the PNP switch has to be reset.

Thanks to both of you. I finally found an old thread were 'riphip' posted a link to downloadable tech files. I got the one for the C6. It seems to be less than perfectly written, but I am pretty sure it will get me through this.

Thanks again.

remove the shift lever--remove the neutral start switch--then take a small sheet metal screw--and turn the screw into the seal a ways--1/2 way between the shaft--and the case housing--then take a nail puller--or a claw hammer--and pull seal and screw out--tap new one in--they arent in there that hard--and ressemble--

Strictly for the benefit of anyone who queries this thread in the future and wonders how it was fixed....

It can't be done without dropping the pan- at least mine could not. The outer lever has a lip on it which completely covered the seal from view. That is indifferent, though, as the outer lever must be removed to replace the seal, and you can't remove that lever until you remove the nut holding it on- which is inside the pan.

A couple of other things that may be worth pointing out...
1) The inner lever won't come out until you remove the nut holding on the outer lever. The manual tells you to remove the inner lever and then remove the nut on the outer lever and then remove the outer lever. I can guarantee you this was not an option on mine. The inner lever made contact with a drum (?) long before it would come out.
2) I had my control valve body out at the same time to fix a problem with the intermediate band adjustment spacers. I didn't stop to look at this too closely, but in retrospect, I strongly suspect the valve body would also need to be out to make this seal repair. I could be wrong, but if you are making this repair, remember it may be necessary.

Respectfully,
Devo
