you have to remove the fuel filter. dont worry about removing the the bottom part of the filter that way you wont have to refill you filter. after the removal of the filter it is easier to dissassemble the filter mount. such as the fuel line the two bolts and etc. the remove the big nut from under the mount assembly. then the sensor can be removed. unfortanately the parts stores in my area didnt have any seals that would fit nor the replacement. but they did sell o rings. so i came up with the ideal of taking an round file to widen the hole so the thicker o ring would fit. this was my only vehicle at the time so i had to make it work. if you have the time or another vehicle just order it. but if you decide to do it be careful with filing. try o file as even and less at one time as possible. you have to test fit in between filing.

You don't have to remove the filter housing if you don't want to. Just remove the filter, then the heater assembly can be unbolted then pulled out of the housing head.
then the sensor can be removed
It's not a sensor that's leaking, it's the fuel heater unit. (In case you need a new heater you want to ask for the right part.) If the Orings are leaking, parts houses stock the correct size. If the plastic connector itself is cracked, you can get a new heater at an IH dealership for 1/2 the price Ford wants. Like Chuckster posted, there's a thread on this about a week old.

What they said, filter head removal is NOT necessary, and honestly I'd highly advise against it (don't wanna disturb the "olives" in in the steel line fittings). I have two filters in my truck, next to each other, I can easily get the stock one even with the other one getting in the way. Apply some grease on the o-ring when you slide it in place on the heater plug, then grease it some more before sliding the whole thing back in the filter head, it makes life a whole lot easier.

Most likely it is the o-ring, Ford doesn't stock the o-ring only anymore, but as stated you can get one elsewhere. That happened to me over a year ago on a weekend, so I couldn't get parts. So I re-installed it with fuel resistant rtv, so far-so-good, it hasn't leaked yet. Another option if you have trouble finding o-rings.

I just spent the last day looking for o-rings to no avail. Two o-ring supply stores were closed as were countless hydraulic shops. I called International today with little luck(I have to track it down without a part number , might be a week). I had to have my truck today so I took it in the rear and got one from Ford. $173.64 with tax. Ford had a somewhat transparent sticker covering the IH part number. I call IH and guess what; $80. The new heater assembly is one unit with one o-ring, still available at ford. Anyhow, I have a used heater assembly for sale intact and cheap if somebody needs one less o-rings.

The IH number is: 1816602C91

I fixed mine with JB weld. No leaks, and NO BS!!! If it needs to come off, I'll install bullet quick connectors on the wire.

I used orings out of one of my many kits. It doesn't have to be an exact fit as they do compress some. I may have to pull mine back apart to see which ones I used and then post the sizes.....
