Hello I have a '96 250 w/ 222k mi. no mods, most recent work was a cps replacement,5k mi ago. This winter I have had some trouble with starting due to bad GP's they are now on order. during my attempts at starting if I was impatient and cranked too long my hpop would empty. oil level in eng. was good. truck can sit for a week+ and maintain the reservoir in the hpop(no apparent leak down)..today I changed my coolant and tstat and oil change..I just ran into town ( 20 min drive) and on the trip home I noticed brief jumps in my rpm's while at cruising speed. WOT ran fine. Once I got home and went to idle down,the engine really started to "hunt"...I noticed the ammeter running higher than normal(even higher than when GPR is on)...any one have any thoughts as to where to start?

This sounds to me like IPR sticking or acting up or injector o-rings leaking.
Did you notice any oil in fuel filter?
