One question: when it's cranking do you hear some relays chattering behind the dash? If so it's time for some new batteries. Weak batteries tend to manifest themselves by having enough power to do everything EXCEPT send the signal to fire the injectors. The engine still turns over at about the same speed as with fresh batteries, but it won't fire off as easily. So, if your batteries are over 3 years old, I'd change them out.

Check your oil. Have you needed to add any oil lately? Might have drained down your HPOP a little. Would have probably been down more than 4-6 quarts for this to happen though.

Might have lost the glow plugs also.

Like others have said, have auto place put a load test on the batteries.

Several of us have found that the little plunger in the fuel return line can get plugged and cause this. This plunger is at the fuel bowl, upper driver's side, forward. The plunger has a little hole in it that allows trapped air to escape the fuel bowl. You can clean the hole with a pin or needle. There is a spring in there, so be careful when you remove it. Also plan on a new O-ring/gasket for the line after removing.

I doubt it's your glow system, since it happens warm (I don't even use my glow system when the engine is warm). And if you remove your high pressure oil pump plug and see oil within a couple of inches from the top, it wouldn't be that either. When's the last time you changed your fuel filter?

On the inside, when looking at the bowl at about 4 o'clock about an inch down from the top. directly in line with a fuel line.

Does anyone have a pic of where this little hole is on top of the fuel bowl? I can't seem to find it.

It's shown HERE as part 9B249. You'll need to remove the return fuel line and the two torx screws holding the plunger's little cap on. You'll want a new return line gasket and o-ring for the re-install. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You gotta take it apart, AND not lose the spring first, then put it back together, easy except for the not losing the spring part. BTW, nobody knows the part number for the spring, you gotta find it. Check the neighbors yard first. LOL

By the way, did we tell you, BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE THE SPRING.

P.S. Don't ask why I know about this.
