So, I am at it again. Rode out to the farm country and looked at a 2001 F250 farm truck. Owner wants $11,500 for it. 4x4, Supercab, Cloth seats. Over all it drove well. Took a while to start, like the batteries were low but it was responsive and only smoked a little when i was pushing it hard.

3 things I noticed.

First There was oil pooled below the HPOP? in between the heads. The owner said it was where it started leaking earlier out of the HPOP and he took it to a local mechanic who fixed it. It appears to be no longer leaking and he never took the time to clean up the oil in the hard to reach places. Below is a pic with the bolt/drain plug circled where he said it was leaking from.

Sound right or something else?

Also here is a picture of the starter where oil is dripping from, cant really tell if its from the starter seal or leaking down from the top of the engine.

Next, he said the transmission had been rebuilt. So upon further inspection it appears that two bolts were missing... Heres a pic,

***? its not leaking any fluid and there are no weird noises, but damn...

Worth my time? Should I offer less and use the leftover cash to take care of any issues?

Wow - looking at the top pic, I find myself trying to stand on my head to get perspective. Looked kind of funny. Anyway - looks like you circled the water in fuel / fuel heater connection. There is a fuel port right above it - 10 cent o-ring will fix that. Here's a link to a picture where you see what's back there:

Replacement O-rings for Ford Diesel Engines

Otherwise - a few bolts and a few hours degreasing and you should be golden. The starter isn't leaking oil - I guarantee that one in writing. The amount of grunge on that side is pretty normal. Mine looks the same way.

Awesome thanks! thats basically what the owner told me, that it was a O-ring. The edges on it were a little rounded like the guy who replaced it didnt use the correct size wrench, but that seems to be the trend in small south GA towns!
