I am looking at a 1995 L9000 with a 300hp cat. 9speed trans. 100k
28' bed. 2 rear axles. The guy is asking $25,000. Just wondering if anyone can give some feedback on these trucks. i.e. pluses and minuses of motor, trans, etc. Also is the price fair??

Thanks

25k sounds high, but depending on what kind of bed is on it it may be fair.

300 cat, is it a 3306? or 3406?

we have a 96 Ford Louisville 5000gal oil tanker at work, Big Yellow Cat 350hp i think.....not sure if its a 3306 or 3406 should be the latter. it has a 10spd. good truck, but the brakes are touchy and need to be adjusted often, they are at the end of their life though and getting replaced. i like the interior, it looks kind of liek the newer Pickups but in big truck form. comfortable. no problems out of the axles or trans or pto. it has good visibility. i like the old truck

just remember electronic cat=money when broken. ours had a new engine put in it and it was like 15k for just the engine and we put it in. and i think we got a deal on it haha.

ours looks like the first sterlings, they were the same truck. but ours is a ford, not sure if we are talking about the same type of truck

I am new to the bigger trucks so I did not ask what model number the motor was

I did drive it, and it ground like I did not have the clutch down all the way but it was, I asked if it needed a new clutch and he said no, that it's not a big deal. I have known this guy for years so I believe him.

Bed looks a little chewed up, and I want to put a 25000 lb skytrak on it, he has a price of 5000 to put on air assisted ramps to run machine on to bed.

It says ford on the front, so I assume that it is what it is? How would you tell if it's a sterling/ford? The underbody is in real good shape for 1995. thanks for the feedback. you can see the machine on our webpage at www.zbc1.com jz

On large trucks, the transmission doesn't have synchromesh gearing. Instead, they have a clutch brake. It's a small disc on the input shaft, and when you press the clutch all the way to the floor, it presses this disc against the input shaft and stops it spinning. Then it should slide into gear easily. Even if it is worn down, in most cases the clutch brake can be replaced without having to remove the clutch. Any diesel repair shop should be able to do it for less then $200.

By the way...the clutch brake only comes into play when the vehicle is stopped. Obviously if the vehicle is moving, the tranmission is spinning. Thats when either "floating gears" or "double-clutching" comes into play...

Parts and service are much harder to come by on the Louisville Ford. I have worked alot on the L-9000 and L-8000, that truck would be one of my last choices. Your price range offers you so many better choices. 300hp Cat in a 95 would most likely be a 3176, decent enough engine but expensive to work on.

Thanks, I backed out of the truck and will keep looking. I have been looking mostly at the fl80, but if not for the input here I may have jumped into that L9000. Is it reasonable to think a decent truck can be found at our price range? Thanks again. jon z

FL80 would be a much better choice, when you find something get the engine serial# and call the manufacturer. Parts or the shop can tell you whats been done to engine, most newer stuff has been worked on by the manufacturer. Another good choice would be IHC 4900 or 7400, the IHC runs a DT466, one of the best medium duty engine's built. IHC or Cummins will be a huge price diff for parts and service than Cat.
