Been trying to track down the oil leak, but its hard with the entire undercarrage covered with oil.

Anyways it looks like most of the dripping is at the back of the engine

My guess is rear main seal is gone.

Any other ideas?

And While I have done many rear mains in other cars/trucks, is there a shop manual on doing this job or tricks I must know?

I figure its just drop the tranny and install the new seal.

Thanks in advance, going to tear into it tomorrow, so any help you all can provide would be great!!!

dont know about the 6.0 but on the 7.3 rear main leaks are rare.id guess the 6.0 does not have a rear main issue.but the best way to determine the source of the leak is to use an ultraviolet dye, clean the engine the best you can, install the dye, then using a uv light look for the source of the leak.GOOD LUCK

i think a bed plate leak is more common on the 6.0s,but that requires removal of engine.start with the dye.

You may wish to look at the oil dipstick tube. I've read it likes to leak over time, right around the base.

And since you've had inkjector work on the pass side, might want to look at the high pressure oil line, though I can't remember if they run into the heads at the rear or the front.

Didnt have any leaks until the dealership replaced a passenger side injector.

Been getting worse ever since...
I would start by looking at the area where they did the injector.
Bad valve cover gasket?
Bolt not tight?
Turbo Oil lines?
Anything they took loose to replace the injector.

The amount of leakage points more to a leaking pressurized oil line some place. A rear seal would have to be really destroyed to leak like that.

The amount of oil sounds too much to be an ICP sensor if your truck is a 2003 or early '04 - that will leak down the back of the engine and look like a main seal or bed plate sometimes.

When the dealership did the Oil Cooler in 2008, they broke the ICP sensor, and when I drove it home with it broken it shot oil upward over top of the engine. Is that normal for ICP leaks?

Its an 04

I was thinking it could be Valve cover leak, but I guess I am used to VC leaks to leak on the headers.

I hate oil leaks... they are so hard to diagnose unless its an oil pan :(

If you had an ICP or IPR leak that bad, I would expect you would be getting a Check engine light and a code in the P2285 to P2291 range and probably the truck would not run well. Normally the ICP sensor leaks out through the connector and runs down the back of the engine on these early trucks. The ICP and IPR have a lot of pressure (600 to several thousand PSI) when the engine is running so it could be a blown O-ring. With the level of leakage you have, you should be able to see where it is running down from if it is on the top side.

Frankly, I would be looking for something leaking in the rear of the valley of the engine. Still could be a VC. Take a good hard look at the oil lines to the turbo as well. There are 4 electrical connectors on the intake side of each Rocker Arm carrier (between the VC and the Head) that may leak.

If you do go after the rear main seal, send me a PM with your email and I will send a copy of the page in my manual.

Oil leaks are not fun especially when it leaks one place and runs someplace else before it shows up.

I just had my oil and egr coolers replaced and 6 days later all the engine oil got pumped out and went down the back of the engine. Its leaking somewhere under the turbo or a little ways in front. There is a puddle of oil right behind the oil filter housing on top of the oil cooler. What could have ruptured? Is it something that wasnt tightened or did the new oil cooler burst already? The coolant is clean.

It did this sometime near the end of a 30 min drive, but I was on the freeway so the oil coated the whole underside of the truck. It never did anything while driving to alert me that it was losing oil. Ran perfect until I got home and saw an 18" wide puddle of oil under the truck when I got out.

It must be a pressurised leak to eject that much oil in a short time. Whats under or near the turbo or in that area that would do this?

The truck has started to run better and better which scares me because when it runs this good it always breaks right after.

The oil pressure switch looks pretty clean compared to some of the other parts around it. Possibly broken or leaking. There are weep holes in the oil filter base that will allow oil or coolant to escape if a seal is damaged in the oil cooler.

At a gallon per 100 miles, you should be able to see oil running if it's coming from the pressure switch. Get a mirror with a handle and look around where you think it's coming from with the engine running.

Another place that looks suspiciously clean to me is the base of the tube that oils the turbo just to the right of the OP switch. The tech that replaced the injector may have pulled the turbo to have more room to work and didn't get the turbo oiler tube replaced properly. It doesn't really look like the big blue compressor outlet tube is dripping down on the wire harness below it that is oily. I would suspect that oil is being sprayed from a leak nearby.

Ended up being the pressure switch

Was hard to find because at idle it didnt drip. I wedged a stick in on the pedal to get 2k+ rpm and it was hard to seee but it was coming out of the top of the sender like a volcano and clinging to the side...

So glad I am not spending $120 a week in oil ....
