I have a 1988 F250 7.3 IDI with ATS turbo and auto with gv overdrive. Last time I pulled a truck on a trailer up a hill and was in drive with 12PSI boost and EGT around 700. My engine temp was around 3/4 gauge before hot. Soon after it would start hard and when idling it would have a miss and some small amount of smoke. Then I couldn't get it started after sitting two weeks and had to jump it with my battery charger. I pulled a trailer for my brother a short distance with no trouble but when idling it would miss even more and smoke more. Then on my way home it really started to smoke blue like you had a gas engine with broken rings. When I let off the gas going down hill almost no smoke but when I get on the gas just a little bit it starts smoking like crazy agian! What is going on with the truck? What do I need to do to fix this? I have let it sit now for a couple months.

Have you checked the coolant level.........

Do you know what the CDR valve is..........

We are talking tailpipe smoke right.......white is air in fuel, blue is usually oil, black is too much fuel. Do you use additives in the fuel....have you drained the fuel filter water drain recently or changed the filter.

Sorry for not checking in lately. Coolant OK. I do use addatives and do know what the CDR is from reading on the board and have drained water from filter.

Update: Checked the mechanical advance on the IP and it was sticking. Lubricated and it seems to be fine now. I started it and it ran great for one day after sitting for three months. Next morning same condition back agian. It starts hard and runs on about 6 cylinders with clouds of blue smoke not white. Then I start driving and hit 2200 RPM and the truck takes off like a rocket, blue smoke and missing instantly gone! Then it has a lot of blue smoke when about 1500 RPM cruising under light load. Step on the gas and smoke is gone. Let off gas and smoke is gone. Stop and idle and blue smoke appears and has slight miss ( not like at start up).

Someone local said it was the IP and I can see the one on the truck is not original. If that is what the problem is, where do I get one, what's the best brand, and how much $$ are they?

Please help I need to get this thing back on the road agian!

Sounds like the IP is going south on you. Try pouring room temp or outside temp water on the IP just before start up when it is still hot and if she starts then the IP is going on you. Keep about a gallon with you for multiple testing to determine that it is the IP
