Alright Fellas just purchased an 02 Dually with a 7.3 seems to run really good (134k). Starts fine when cold but bellows white smoke until warmed up, once warm, smoke is gone and runs fine. I've never run into this before with my Excursion and I'm hoping for the best. Gonna dig in this weekend to see if I can figure it out but wanted to post here first to get some opinions.

I also have this problem. I also get about 12 mpg with my truck any time of the year. I was wondering what you are getting.

White smoke

I've only had the truck a few days so I don't know what the mileage is yet, 12 seems low though. My Excursion (lifted and rolling 35s) gets at least 15 in the city. Did you ever figure out what the problem (white smoke) was? Guy I bought it from said a bad glow plug, hopefully will find out this weekend.

White smoke indicates unburned fuel at start up, but should quit when the engine warms up a little. If it should continue, take a cylinder compression check. A low mileage engine should check at least 400-450 with a warm engine, 100 lbs difference between cylinders is about max. More than that could mean bad valves or broken/bad compression rings. In Chandler AZ you shouldn't even worry about GP's for starting. With only 134K your compression should check on the hi side.

how would i go about checking the pressures? I am just starting to do my own work. also how about changing the gp's? i read the post about checking them. I will be doing that this weekend. I blow white smoke until it is warm then it stops.

white smoke

I tried something last night which leads me to believe it is a glow plug, I plugged in the block heater overnight and when I started it. No white smoke. Any thoughts? As far as not needing the glow plugs in Arizona, at night during the winter it gets into the high 20's low 30's, last night it was probably 45 or so.

Check your Air Intake Heater (AIH) and glow plugs for proper operation.
