I just bought 99 model f350 that does not achieve full boost. dont have gauge yet,but after owning 3 i can feel its not operating fully. Can hear it spool normally upon acceleration, but then just seems to linger around at mid boost. Especially noticable in O/D . Was wondering how to check if wastegate is operating poorly,or if turbo is week? The engine runs fantastic otherwise, very smooth,no injector issues. It just turned 200k,and is the early 99 model. The guy before me installed a mild tune from predator(which i have), and i notice a steady stream of black smoke even under mild acceleration. Im assuming thats because the turbo is not working properly to get enough air to match the fuel bieng consumed, does that make sense??

Thats it in a nutshell, with the black smoke. Mid 99 is when the changes happened to the engine hardware, being the turbo, IC, intake plenums, HPOP, and a fender badge:icon_wink:. Without the gauge, the only thing you can do is check out the turbo itself for issues, and inspect all connections for leaking. Also check out the air filter.
You really need to get a gauge on it to get a reading. You can try checking out the linkage on the wastegate, and even unplug it, but without knowing exactly how much boost you are pushing, you could be rolling the dice.
