New to diesels, but I'm looking at a '92 F250 Lariat. Odometer says 31k, im assuming its 131 because the interior of the truck is near mint. Body is alright, about what you would expect for a '92 living in the northeast. I drove it, runs real smooth, shifts good, no smoke, no leaks. the only thing that concerns me in the oil pressure was reading a little low, only about 1/4 of the way up the gauge. that concerns me a bit....

I worked for a local EMS agency and have driven early 90's Ford ambulances with 400-500,000 miles on them with no problems so I know this could potentially be a good truck for me. Just worried about that low reading on the oil pressure gauge though....

The only way you could really tell the Oil pressure is to put a mechanical gauge on it. The idiot gauge may be way off. These engines run oil press. hot at idle 20psi, driving 40 to 60psi.

Yeah, the oil pressure 'gauge' is kind of a joke on these things. Mine changed depending on its mood.
By the way, a '92 will show 6 digits on the digital odometer, so if it's showing 31K, its probably only got 31K. A '91 and down truck will only have a 5 digit mechanical odometer, so it's difficult to tell.

As for the Oil Pressure these 7.3's should be running, is there a Oil Volume gauge?

Thanks, JASTECH

F series trucks the sending unit is an on and off switch, E series it's an actual pressure sending unit.

All the id motors oil pumps are the same. They all flow 18.2 gallons per minute at 3000 rpm. Its volume... Not pressure that works. The oiling system was designed to lube plenty of aux systems like air compressers on the dump type truck applications. The block has 3 extra ports for this.

I have 325k on my 89 and my oil pressure gauge doesnt move away from the low line. It mite move a bit below that too. It doesnt use oil and doesnt leak it either just doesnt have pressure. Is 20w-50 okay to run in my engine?

Do you have a real gauge installed or are you looking at the dash gauge? If it's the dash gauge it isn't a real gauge just an idiot light without the light.

Yeah Paul, Ford did away with the light over the head long time ago. Remember, Ford has a better Idea.:icon_rolleyes:

I have a 1992 international dt 444 (not powerstroke) engine it reads normal oil pressure until i drive it for about 10min, then the oil pressure drops all the way to low pressure... I have had that problem for uver two years and nothing has happened to the truck (engine-wise) running good.

If your only reading the dash gauge, it's not going to tell you the real pressure. Get an aftermarket gauge and then see what it is.

At operating temp, using 15W-40 diesel rated oil, you should have 12-14 PSI. The IDI engine lubes by volume, not pressure.

if the E-series has a working gauge then you can take its sender, put it in the F-series, and bypass a resistor on the back of the cluster to get a working gauge. there's no numbers on it though, so what good would that do you?

What brand oil pump did you use? I remember just reading another thread about using only the IH pump.
