I'm on my second replacement stock fuel pump and am feeling these are just not up for handling anything but diesel. How about replacing it with a Mallory 110FI fuel pump? Its a gear pump so it can easily handle the veggie. I've heard some of the hotrodding folks use this pump for high HP applications.

Question: do we need the Mallory fuel pressure regulator or will the stock one work ok? This pump puts out LOTS more gallons per hour. Will the stock regulator be able to handle that?

With this style pump I don't think we'd need boost pumps or anything beyond a separate 10 micron (or better) WVO filter.

Suggestions? Observations?

Todd,

I've been mostly lurking lately, as I'm just running fine with no issues and nothing new to report.

Just as an observation, you've had the most fuel system related issues of anyone I've met so far. Shortly after moving to NC, I bought a replacement pump from Autozone, but mine is running fine two years since the conversion. I usually start on cold oil when the temp is over 50*, and I have a totally looped return. I have run completely out of diesel fuel multiple times and filled the system with air. If anyone's pump should have failed by now, it seems it would be mine...

Has anyone given you an idea why your system might be more prone to failure? Could there be a pressure sensor problem? Electrical voltage or other issue? Maybe a bad relay?

It just seems strange that I've treated my pump so badly with no problems, while you just battle headache after headache.

Sorry to give you more questions rather than answers...

Best regards,

I hear you man! I really think I screwed up by trying too hard to help the factory fuel system by adding a boost pump, then supplemental filters to protect this pump and so on. I'm thinking now that the simplest method for the later model 7.3 PSD's would be to just add a WVO filter and use the stock pump. When (not if) the factory pump dies, go ahead and replace it with a gear pump like the Mallory 110FI. This one pump can handle both diesel and WVO.

The remaining question is: do we need to add a fuel pressure regulator after the Mallory pump or is the stock regulator sufficient to handle the higher flow?
