I saw a post that stated that you can order a new truck with manual hubs. I can't find it now. Is it possible to order a truck with manual hubs? What about a manual transfer case shifter?

Thanks.

Yes, when you order a truck...just don't check the ESOF option. Both of my past two ordered trucks, Lariats, where manual 4x4 systems. My dealer is now starting to order a 50/50 mix of ESOF trucks and manual systems. I prefer the manual system, but unfortunately had to accept ESOF on my new truck as this truck had 95% of what I wanted and 5% of what I did not want. However, I did not feel like waiting until April or May to get an ordered unit so I made some sacrifices.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to order mine without the ESOF. Are the hubs the same? Unless something has changed, I think the hubs have a Manual and an Auto setting. Is this still the case? Man am I glad it can be ordered without ESOF. I want to be able to flat tow behind my motorhome for one thing and I can't stand the electric/vacuum/whatever way they use to shift the transfer case. I can't afford to be stuck somewhere just because of a simple failure. I just don't think it's all that hard to pull a shift lever once in a while. And that's coming from a guy that likes his comfort a lot more now than I used to!

FYI - I was told that if I ordered now, I would take delivery at the end of February or the 1st of March (I guess about 10/11 weeks). That's because of the holiday shutdown. That's coming from Bobby at Sunrise. So I don't think the April or May timetable that you were told is correct. I'm not in a hurry though since I will probably be out of town a fair bit until almost the beginning of March anyway. Of course, I'll probably still be anxious and complaining if I don't see it on time!

Yeah I kind of wondered about the ordering time table...as my dealer usually has a really good allotment, but with the employee pricing and rebates and a real good interest rate, it just kind of worked out.

The 'manual' hubs with 'manual' transfer case are 'shift on the fly'. The only time you must stop to shift is when you go into the Low Range.
FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) OPERATION (IF EQUIPPED)
For important information regarding safe operation of this type
of vehicle, see Preparing to drive your vehicle in this chapter.
When four–wheel drive (4WD) is engaged, power is supplied to all four
wheels through a transfer case. 4WD can be selected when additional
traction is desired.
4WD operation is not recommended on dry pavement. Doing so could
result in difficult disengagement of the transfer case, increased tire wear
and decreased fuel economy.
Manual Shift On Stop (MSOS) 4x4 system (if equipped)
The 4WD system is engaged or
disengaged by rotating the control
for both front wheel hub locks from
the FREE or LOCK position, then
manually engaging or disengaging
the transfer case with the
floor-mounted shifter. For increased
fuel economy in 2WD, rotate both
hub locks to the FREE position.
• For proper operation, make
sure that each hub is fully
engaged and that both hub locks are set to the same position
(both set to LOCK or both set to FREE). To engage LOCK,
turn the hub locks completely clockwise; to disengage the hubs
(FREE), turn the hub locks completely counterclockwise.
• Some vehicles may be equipped with wheel ornaments that cover the
4x4 manual hub lock. These ornaments must be removed to access
the manual hub locks.
Electronic Shift On the Fly (ESOF) 4x4 system (if equipped)
If equipped with the electronic shift 4WD System, and the
instrument panel control is moved to 4X4 LOW while the vehicle
is moving above 5 mph (8 km/h), the system will not engage and
no damage will occur to the 4WD system. Before 4X4 LOW can be engaged, the vehicle speed must be below 5 mph (8 km/h) with
the brake pedal depressed and the transmission in N (Neutral). If
your vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, the clutch
pedal also must be depressed. This vehicle is equipped with a
non-synchronous low range gearset which will not allow the
transfer case to shift into 4X4 LOW if vehicle speed is above
5 mph (8 km/h). It is recommended that a shift to 4X4 LOW is
performed while the vehicle is rolling at a speed below 5 mph
(8 km/h).
The 4WD system:
• provides 4x4 High engagement and disengagement while the vehicle is
moving.
• is operated by a rotary control located on the instrument panel that
allows you select 2WD, 4x4 High or 4x4 Low operation.
• uses auto-manual hub locks that can be engaged and disengaged
automatically based on the 4x4 mode selected.
• auto-manual hub locks can be
manually overridden by rotating
the hub lock control from AUTO
to LOCK if desired.
• automatic operation of the
hub locks is recommended, and
will increase fuel economy
• For proper operation, make
sure that each hub is fully
engaged and that both hub
locks are set to the same position (both set to LOCK or both
set to AUTO). To engage LOCK, turn the hub locks completely
clockwise; to engage AUTO, turn the hub locks completely
counterclockwise.
Using a Manual Shift On Stop (MSOS) 4x4 system (if equipped)
Note: High shift efforts may be encountered when attempting to
shift into and out of 4x4 modes. It is recommended to allow the
vehicle to roll at a speed below 5 mph (8 km/h) when shifting.

ESOF trucks have manual hubs.... they have an auto position, but they are manual hubs all the same...

Now.... if you plan on flat towing a Super Duty... you will need a manual shift transfer case... Last I checked, flat tow programming was not available for the ESOF SD.

I have a 2001 excursion, trying to get home from work Friday in a snowstorm the 4wd would not engage. The light came on, but no front drive. All heat controls work fine. Do I read it right here that I can manually turn the hubs?

Reading another thread I see it could be electrical, if my 4x4 light comes on and I seem to have vacuum (heater controls work) it sounds like either hub seals or a fuse blown? I did have dead batteries recently and had to jump, Im getting the alternator and batteries tested tomorrow.

We could on our 2001 F250 with ESOF. I believe the choices are auto and locked.
