Any Maryland F350 owners out there that can assist with a question I have?

I am a non-commercial user looking to purchase a F350 over a F250 for the extra capacity. Dealer here is telling me the F350 requires yearly inspections and tags are more expensive over the F250.

Can anyone help with the facts, Maryland DMV web site seems lacking the info I need....

The tags renew every year and cost more, the insurance is also a little more. MD only requires a safety/ state inspection when you first tag, if buying used. If you are looking to buy a dwr you should also look at the 450. The turning radius is worth the extra cost.

Yearly tag renewal would be ok - how much more would you say the F350 tags are a year - 100 or less - 150 or more over a F250?

Will call my insurance in the morning to see their difference.

F350 Single with extended bed would be perfect for me. F250 would work but for just a little more money I would rather get the extra capacity of the F350.

What you pay for 2 years for the f250 is the yearly cost for the 350. A set of air bags or the kelderman system would be an option for the 250 if you have a heavy load.

You can have your cake and eat it too... just order the F350 with the 10,000 GVW package. As I understand it, there are no mechanical changes to the truck, it just lowers the GVWR on the sticker so you should be able to register it for the same cost as an F250 in MD. I found the fee schedule for MD here -> Fees for Registration Plates

That is great news - awesome find on the fee schedule for MD tags - I owe ya a cold one...

So, the F350 with 10k GVWR package is the same truck as the standard F350?

When i registered my F350DRW the guy at DMV or MVA (depending on how old u r)said they register all one tons at 10k, my door sticker has 11,200 as GVWR, unless a higher GVWR is specified by owner. Yearly fee is $103.50 at 10k.

Yes, you can register it at 10k, GVWR, but just be careful. You have the extra capability, but if you go over the limit, you still have some legal liabilities if caught.

What are you planning on pulling/hauling, and what's your maximum estimated load (include passengers, cargo, trailer tounge weight, trailer weight, etc) Figure out what's best for you. With driver, cap, line-x, and most of the goodies, my F-350 weights in at over 8k (exact number unavailable at this time, wife has the truck with weigh station card in it). Is under 2k lbs. of load capacity going to be enough? If you're hauling a 5th wheel or gooseneck, calculate how much you can really tow with just the 10k GVRW registration (if you are registered at 10k, you are limited to 10k, no matter what your vehicle says).

Also, if you get the 10k GVWR option from Ford, you probably won't be able to register it for the higher value a 350 would normally be able to have later on if you need it.

For better understanding of what you need, tell us what you are planning on pulling, hauling, etc. Also, search these forums for some of SmokeyWren's posts. He has quite a few posts helping people to figure out what they need in terms of capability

Have to watch your insurance also...anything over 10,000 lbs with a lot of companies require a commercial policy. Ford is upping their anti for 2011 and adding some heightened weight capacities that send some of the trucks over the roof and into commercial...even F250's, and correct me if I'm wrong but I want to say that their web site even had an F150 option over that limit...

Not trying to hijack this thread but another thing to think about between a 10K gvwr and one that is higher is the fact if your vehicle is over 10K some states do not provide protection under the lemon law should you have a problem with your vehicle. I know Florida and Tenn. both have the 10K limit for lemon law.

Just more food for thought.

how did you make out with the insurance company?
In the same situation, MD also, and we have state farm, which was only 200 more per year from our f250.

Went ahead and orderd the F-350 with the 10,000 GVWR package so everything will be taxed, titled, insured at the same price of a F-250.

Yea - in theory I shouldn't go over the 10,000 GVWR, but I am not commerical so not subject to scales and my calculations have me at 9,990 pounds GVWR (trailer tounge weight, people, fuel, etc.) so that would be "MAX" on the F-250 but that is "Comfortable" with my F-350....

Works for me! :)

Did a google search on a similar topic and came back to this thread from many years back - awesome! ;-)

So - looking at a new Ram 3500 SRW and scratching my head as they don't offer a "10,000 GVWR" option as does Ford. Anyone have an ideals on workarounds when registering in Maryland?

Ya come to California. My 15 was $650 last year for tags. I also have smog checks every 2 years @ $100. Get you some of that.
