I just found a good deal on an extremely nice 2001 F250 4x4 with 100,300 miles on it. Code on tranny indicates 3/20/01 build date - right at the end of the dreaded mechanical diode run per Ford's TSB - which says they were included through 3/23/01.

I bought the truck from the original owner who never touched the tranny and pulled a fifth wheel a bunch with it.

My question: Did all transmissions mfg. before 3/23/01 have the mechanical diode?

I'm hoping that this one didn't since it was so late in the run of those trannys and has lasted this long.

Anyone know if all pre 3/23/01 trannys had it, or if they may have phased them out in some trucks made as late as 3/20/01?

If it does have it, is Ford helping out with any discount on a reman for a mechanical diode truck?

Thanks!

If it was in a diesel, then yes, it they all did. They didn't change over the line early, then change it back to mechanical diodes, then change it again. All diesel 4R100s from the start of 2001 until 3/23/01 had a mechanical diode when it left the factory.

Not possible.

Thanks for your reply.

A couple of years ago, I talked to a guy who said Ford sold him a reman tranny at cost on a mechanical diode tranny that didn't get replaced under warranty. I think they had just done it a short time before I talked to him, but I'm not sure.

Wouldn't hope for any more than maybe a discount on one, and wouldn't expect that.

FYI

I have a early build 2001. 2/01 build date. Bought new. PSD Excursion 4 x 4

I use it for general transportation. Almost no towing and no chip. All was fine until 181k. Took the truck to the Blue Ridge Mountains for a 2000 mile drive and then towed a friends Hot Rod for about 200 miles. The trip to the mountains was the first time the transmission had really been worked.

A few days later the mechanical diode in the transmission cracked. Truck was able to limp to the shop. When we opened up the 4R100, it looked brand new inside. But the mechanical diode was cracked. (the trans had the ATF replaced many times during its life with Mobil 1 ATF)

I could have just replaced the cracked mechanical diode and driven home. But made the decision to rebuild the whole trans with all the best parts, except the billet input and output shafts. Also added a billet triple disk low stall converter and 6.0 cooler.

I will let you know how it worked out in about 10 more years! (have about 50k on the new trans now without any issues)
