I looked underneath the hood at the 3" aluminum hoses to see if the intercooler hoses were loose or off and there not. The problem is still there. When I let off the gas I hear a noise from underneath the hood like a choking sound. I run next to the truck the sound comes from the air intake (a loud sound) and it sound like it is starving for air. When I am steping on the gas trying to accelerate I have a loss of power. At high speeds when the tranny shifts you can still hear and feel the choking sound. This problem comes and goes. It is not consistent. A five minute drive and nothing happens, then 5 minutes later it is happening again. This truck only has 1580 miles on it. I am going to take the truck into the dealer but I would like to have a heads up on this before I do. All help would be greatly appreciated. Many comments will help me in my quest to get this truck working properly. Thank You all. Paul Ivazes

This was several years ago on my 7.3; but the symptom sounds somewhat familiar; If I sound a little choppy in explaining; it's just the fact it was years ago.

Look underneath the turbo; the turbo pedestal; you'll find where the wastegate actuator linkage connects to the turbo pedastal.

It's probably came unhooked. Simple fix.

Good luck.

It might be the torbo fluttering. If it is it sound kinda like the tim taylor grunt form the old sitcom"home improvem". It happens after a high boost condition. When u get back out of the throttle it is the turbo venting off the excess boost...my 2 cents.

There is no wastegate on a 6.0L.

Re: Turbo fluttering, why does this happen and can it be fix?

If you only experienced the "flutter" when getting off the throttle abruptly when under moderate or hard acceleration then the "flutter" would be normal. This would be the noise of the unused boost created under moderate or hard acceleration blowing back out the air intake. This is called "Turbo Fart" and almost all 6.0Ls do this. It is normal and no fix is neccessary, says Ford. To me it sounds like an angry squirrel chattering.

However, you said you have loss of power and also a "flutter" between shifts. This is not normal. There could be a lot of things that would cause this and it is up to a dealer to track them down. Dealers have a "flight recorder" that plugs into the diagnostic port. You may have to ride around with that for awhile. Do not let the dealer tell you that flutter between shifts and loss of power is normal.

Turbo vanes sticking, very common. Will take a new turbo to fix if this is in fact the problem. I replace more turbos on 6.0's than I do cam sensors on 7.3's now.

Just 1 more reason why I will not be buying a new 6.0 Mr. Ford, if you are listeninng to me. Yeah sure. I'm just a former Ford guy they will not miss anyway. Just had to make my negative comments to get the weight off my chest. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bleh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/depressed.gif I fell better already. Man I should have done that a long time ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

So how do I make this truck thats weights 16000 lbs get better fuel milage?

[/ QUOTE ]

1. Put it on a diet. Get rid of anything on it that is unneccessary if possible. Theoretically speaking (Engineering student here), every 6 lbs. you take off equals 1 HP gained, meaning that you're making it easier for your truck to move, therefore making the power to weight ratio better, therefore making your truck feel more powerful, but you're just using the same power you have in a more efficient manner, therefore "feeling" like you have more power, but in actuality, making the engine work less to move the truck, therefore improving your fuel economy. But on a truck that size, you probably wouldn't notice it until at least 500lbs. or so is off, for the power aspect. For better fuel mileage it'd need to lose a lot more weight than that.

2. On a more serious note, everybody else is going to say this as well, get a higher rear end ratio such as a 4.56 or 4.10 if you can get away with it, especially if you don't tow very heavy loads. (I'm guessing your F-550 has a 4.88 or 5.13 rear end ratio???)

As Richter said...turbo vanes sticking most likely. There is also a reflash that addresses the "shuddering" noise from intake. When turbo vanes stick and cause overboosting, it seems to make flutter noise more pronounced. I have had vanes stuck and overboost causing flutter noise, and after replacing turbo and reprogramming, noise was gone. I would recommend staying away from chip to protect warranty. Saving 2 miles per gallon is nothing compared to the $12,000 dollar engine (plus labor to install, plus $3500 core charge if block damaged).

I will second the no chip thing. I am a serious powerhound and all but if I had one of these trucks (which I don't) I would leave it as is. They have enough trouble without any fuel added to the fire. As a side note, for every one I get that is broke there are thousands with no problems. All I ever see are the ones that don't work properly, I get my share of 7.3's as well.
