MY Delta Temps - Good , No Good - Thoughts, Recommendations

Hi

I purchased my 2006 F250SD 4x4 about a month ago with 55k on the clock. The turbo diesel is under warranty until December of 2011 or 60k whichever comes first. Except for a small oil leak someplace which I will be taking to the dealer for the truck runs pretty good.

After joining this site and reading about needing gauges and the delta and the all the problems it causes I figured I better get me a set of gauges and check this out before I go any farther. While I really wanted one of the edge products I went with a scangauge II. I did so because of the cost and because of the ability to program in your own codes where as the edge products you seem to be limited to a set amount of gauges.

Well after programming in the EOT (Big Shout out to DieselMac). I went for a ride on I4 last night and here is what I found out. I went out about 20 miles and came back about 20 miles, figure an hour for the whole trip. I was running between 65-70 mph constant and the highway was mostly flat with small rises and depressions. Hey, It’s Florida.

I was averaging about 6-8 degrees difference between the ECT and EOT. A few times I hit a difference of 10 Degrees but it didn’t stay there long. The most consistent reading was ECT=193 and EOT=200 with variations of just a couple degrees either way. The biggest difference I saw was ECT=191 / EOT=201.

Also I took a good look inside the degas bottle / radiator overflow bottle last night with a flashlight. I didn’t see no chunks or pieces in the degas bottle but I did see a real thin layer of scum on the bottom of it, Kind of like the scum you would see on a glass aquarium after about 2-3 weeks of not cleaning it

So what do you think, I’m pretty sure I’m going with the coolant filter kit I’ve seen people talk about, But what about the flush. Should I Stay with the gold, go with the Good Stuff, Do just a distilled water flush, go whole hog with the restore and the other stuff. What do you think and what would You do. The floor is Yours. Thanks………….

Subscribed. I just did the same thing 2 days ago with my truck and I was wondering the same. My delta mostly stayed consistant at 5 degrees.

"nylyon" has just posted a coolant flushing technique that I think warrants reading by anyone that wants a true, comprehensive flush of their cooling system. He spent considerable time to compose it for use by the entire the 6.0 Ford Truck Owners community.

An ounce of prevention can save you thousands!

I recently flushed my coolant system thoroughly with restore, restore plus, and then distilled water. (Neighbors didn't understand the large pile of gallon jugs, but I did love their looks of confusion). In the end I went with John Deere's newest coolant, it was the only one I could find in my local area that meet my requirements.

Once that was done, I added a coolant by-pass filter. Even after my thorough flush, my first filter clogged within a few thousand miles. I'm about to change my second one after another few thousand miles. The third one should be good for a year or more.

Doing it all is a great way to prevent future problems, but of course, sadly there is no guarantee. Worth it? Yes

I bought my truck in January with 124,000 km (77000 miles). Put an edge insight on it right away and found about a 8 to 10 deg delta on ECT/EOT. Did the full deal flush, changed thermostat and put in coolant filter. Delta may have improved a hair but changing the thermostate has made it run in the correct temp range so hard to tell.

Drove it 2500 km on the long weekend. Half empty, half packing 3400 lb camper and pulling 4000 lb jet boat. On any flat stretch I hit the delta stayed 8 to 10.

I pulled the coolant filter last night after about 3000 km. Found some black flaks and bits of black stuff when I dumped it out. I cut it open and the paper had moderate amount of black stuff but no goo.

Today's challange is rear hub seals, brake pads and E brake shoes.

I did mine with under 30k on it and deltas of 4-6* did my flush the whole 9 yards Restore-Restore+48 gallons of distilled water now i'm running right at 3* delta. I installed the coolant filter first about 2 years ago got the system free of casting sand then did the flush, when i flushed there was O sand or crud in the buckets. I like a clean system.
With 6 months of warranty left and if you do not pull a 5er or TT to build heat you could wait tell the end of the warranty to get the truck check out for any problems then do the flush. I have 2.5 years left on my warranty but i could not aford to wait and do coolers on my dime because i pull a 14k 5er.

temps much better but still good enough

I just picked up my scanguage2, right away i found my delta was 20 to 22 deg diffrent. I braced myself to get ready to replace the oil cooler. But figured i would try the back flush for the hell of it. So i back flushed it. flushed, restore, flushed few times (pretty clear), restore+, and allot of distilled water flushes, like 12 or 13. The first 4 after the restore plus almost looked as yellow as the orginal coolant. New thermostat and coolant filter kit. I ended up using fleet global charged what has the ec-1 requirements on the label. Now i am running around 188-190 ect, and 194-196 on ect. I would like to say what a great idea of the backflush. Cant say it will work for everyone. But seemed to work for me.

My ect and eot are 7-9 difference unloaded. The problem is when I am pulling 8k behind it. I see difference of 20-22 deg difference. My theory right or wrong is that pulling this wieght temps are bound to go up. I am not using or losing any water. I have flushed with distilled water and I run a coolant filter. Coolant temps are normal always. I have a friend whom has replaced both of his coolers brand new and still runs what Im running. The moral of the story is I have been running these temps since I owned this truck for 2 years and have had no issues. I pull the trailer a few times a year. I dont know what is right or wrong but if it isnt broke Im leaving it alone.

i have heard people say 15 degrees but under a full load i would not worry too much about 20-25. as long as the temp is controlled you dont have much to worry about. i really dont get hung up to much on the exact difference in temp as long as it is consistent and controlled i sleep just fine at night
