I am in the process of buying my first diesel truck. I found a clean 2003 f350 (67000 miles) with the 6.0 powerstroke. I did the carfx report and everything looks fine. I have heard alot of negativity from people abut the 6.0's. Is there still a problem with these engines. What should I look for prior to purchasing a diesel. I know my way around a gas engine pretty good, but no thing about diesels. ANy help would be appreciated.

The last truck my Dad had was a 2004 6.0 and he wished he'd have kept his 7.3! His 1996 and 2000 7.3 gave him no trouble. The 04 would lose power and had to be reflashed several times. I'm not sure that Ford knew what was wrong with that model at the time he had it.

I have heard alot about the reflashing of some vehicle. From what I read here and there the 6.0 replaced the 7.3 in 2003, ALso some vehicles were having software problems from the 6.0's, But I think that they solved the problems, but not sure though. I know now they are going to the 6.4's but that was because of the higher demands for emissions.

Also where would I find an oasis report for the vehicle I am looking to buy? the VIN is 1FTSW31PX3EC89321

If it has the latest reflash (EGR and cold start reprogram), you should be good to go. The earlier 6.0's got a lot of negative press, and somewhat deservedly so. However, if it has been taken care of (filters, oil changes, no chips or programmers) it might be a great bargain. Many folks would advise to get head studs and EGR delete if you are going to be doing hard towing applications (or even DD). One of the good things about the 2003 is that IIRC they are more amenable to EGR mods since the CEL is less of an issue. There are some way more experienced folks on this board, so it should be interesting to see what they have to say.

Is there anyway to check and see what the latest flash is on the vehicle? From what I can tell from the vehicle is is completly stock and only had two previous owners. Light mileage, no accidents, and in pretty good shape. I will be towing a gooseneck four horse trailer, but not too often and not real far.

6700 miles sounds VERY LOW = Hmmmmmm

Check my signature for my truck details. I can tell you yes, lots of reprogramming since new. I wish Ford never touched my first one. I grew up on the farm and was used to clatter, smoke and roughness when starting. Never met a tractor that didn't do it. It has been a good truck. Other than a rear main ( appearing ) leak that 4 different dealers were unable to resolve it has been great.

I modded the truck after ford ( without my permission ) reduced my power, fuel mileage and gave me back a truck with a tow/haul that was compromised and a more noisy engine. I have heard horror stories about head gaskets, oil leaks, injector issues, fuel problems but never experienced any of them. I maintain my truck at 5K mile intervals for oil/filter and 15K on the fuel filters. 50K on the trannie. I pull monthly when loaded a 14.5K bumper pull trailer and an 18K 32' GN stock trailer. Get around 10 to 14 mpg when pulling these loads depending on roads, weather, speeds. Get 16.5 to 18.5 empty.

Good Brakes, Good Power, Good Reliability. My wife even likes to drive it. My Dad has an 04 with about 60K on his and has had good luck with his. My uncle has an 05 and I like the changes with it, especially the front suspension and ride.

Ok I just found out the Oasis Report on that vehicle. No major work has been done. Warranty work was done on the following items;
Mirror switch
driver door lock switch
couple of pcm reprograms (recalls)
#4 injector replaced

OK, now, what's the asking price, and what's the body style, and options package. Have you run the truck w/ options through KBB.com or Edmunds.com?

My F250 XLT SC long bed, manual trans, FX4, ESOF w/ heated tow mirrors, running boards, spray in liner, front & rear hitches, & 67k is probably worth about $14k right now.

Oh yeah - does anyone have records on the truck? I've tracked every dime and have reciepts for every fuel purchase, option and maintenance item I've spent on mine. I want to show a prospective buyer I took care of it.

BTW, my truck is NOT FOR SALE!:nono::thumbsup:

Its a 2003 Ford F350 SRW 4x4 crew cab, long bed. leather, sunroof, cd player, pwr windows, locks, seats, etc.. asking $14900. all original, I found it had two previous owners, no signs of abuse. I know diesels are not really broken in till they get around 100,000 miles. I jusy keep hearing bad things about the 6.0's. Also if anyone knows what I should look for on a diesel, prior to buying would be appreciated

are you still sticking with the 6700 miles? and two owners? or 67000 miles and two owners? my extrasensory perceptors are at Defcon 5 so far on this one, my odor detector is also blaring with lights and sirens, displays FISH alert.

Its actually 67000 miles on the vehicle. The original owner purchased the vehicle 07-11-03, 26 miles on it. He sold it on 09-26-06 with 10,157 miles. 2nd owner traded it in on 10-30-08 with 66022 miles on it. The truck has been registered in the same town it entire life.

Ok, just got off the phone with a Ford dealership and asked about the most recent pcm reprograms for this vehicle, (trying to see if it has the most recent program was like pulling teeth)

Anyway what I could find out was that it had a reprogram done May-06. Is this the most recent or should I not worry about it?

2003 Ford 6.0

Our 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine ran awesome on our trip to Missoula,MT ,I'm new to the diesel engine as far as for a personnel vehicle, we purchased the truck and had a check engine light on our test drive , cost me 700 to have Rancho Ford  in Temecula diagnose and replace the EGR valve the part cost 225 online so better to buy it online ,they charged me 399 for the EGR, so dont ever go to Rancho Ford  in Temecula,Ca shop around we where leaving for vacation so they had me by the balls,.. The truck ran awesome though so much power to spare , we are very happy with or truck so far it had 118,000 when we bought it so hopefully all the 6.0 woes where already taken care of so far, So Good,.... good luck

I looked around for sometime, But so far this is the best price I found (14,900). The blue book for good condition is $20,000 and the trade in value is just under $16,000. I alsochecked prices through ebay and some where close to the price, but had more miles or a greater distance for me to look at it?

Be patient, with the economy like it is, deals are out there. Is the truck you're looking at on a dealers lot, or is it a private seller? You can offer them less either way. When I was shopping for trucks a few months ago (when the 09's were coming out)I ran across a dealer ad in Georgia for 2 new 2007 Dodge quadcab duallys...NEW...$24,500.00. With the Cummins, A/C, and automatic. MSRP was $44K.

I have been looking for a little bit, I have come across some good deals, but they all had some issues. A friend of mine owns a used car lot said that if I were looking about 3 months ago when diesel was $6 a gallon they were giving them away at the auctions. Now he tells me that they are starting to increase in price due to the fuel prices dropping. I did fund a 06 Dodge Dually with 120,000 miles, one owner, in real nice shape. but he would not come off the price though. This F350 is from a private dealer, I am going to take a few more looks at this one. If I find any problems I will pass on it. He informed me that it was recently serviced and has no issues, But I never trust car dealers.. Just had some bad dealins with tem in the past.
