Please help? Something happened in my steering columnn and now the ignition, or whatever it is called, won't crank all the way. When I put my key in I can turn it to the point before where you start the engine. I can start the truck by going to the starter solenoid with a wrench. I turn the key as far as it goes & go to the starter solenoid and it starts and runs. But, I want to fix this- any ideas what the problem and solution might be? I am an amateur mechanic. Thanks.

if your column has the access hole underneath the lock you can turn to run (disco batteries first) and then push in a little tab in there to pop the lock out, then you can check to see if that is the problem. could also be the ignition switch, which is underneath the column a ways down from the lock on my truck but I'm not sure about yours :)

you can also try tilting the wheel all the way down and see if it will start.

There is a little part inside the steering column that links the rod system that actuates the ignition switch. I have replaced a few of these. Cost about $20.00 from Ford. I think it was called an "ignition actuator".
Thanks everyone. Lenzhotrod, I think you nailed my problem. At first we thought it was the key cylinder, but it turned out to be that rod that goes up & down the steering column that moves when you turn the key. It wasn't moving correctly when you turned the key. We slipped a slim piece of metal to help it slide correctly. Hopefully, that will work for a while.
