Major Stupid move today.....

I removed the positive wire from my Carter electric fuel pump today, to do a little weatherproofing to the wire & terminal. I figured since those terminals are exposed to the elements, I should put some heat shrink on the wires and their ring terminals. I'd also I'd like to find & put rubber terminal covers over the pump's two threaded posts.

While tightening my wire up again (after heat shrink), I overtorqued that little stud/post, and snapped off the stud for the fuel pumps' positive terminal.

Crap.....

Am I going to have to buy another fuel pump? Anyone ever have one of these things apart, & know if that little post is fixable or not? I tried to call Carter (Federal Mogul) just a few minutes ago, but due to the time zone difference, was too late. Will try tomorrow to see if they can fix it, or if "Stupidity" is covered by warranty....

Also, as a side issue, does anyone know a source for these sort of rubber terminal covers? I can only find a supplier in Britain, so far...... It'd be nice to find one a little closer to Oregon than England..... Are these more of a marine application than an automotive app???

Thanks,
Jimme

Since you are in Oregon are you near the coast to where you could check a marine shop? If not check NAPA and see what they have in their catalog. As far as the terminal on the pump take it apart and see. It is already broken and you can't break it any further.

second that, they sell them at napa, may have to order them depending on the store, second bugman again, only one way to find out if you can fix it! how far off did you snap it, right at the base? if there is enough thread to get a thin nut on it, weld a crimp on wire end to the thin nut and just screw it on

I'm about 80-90 miles from the coast, but there are a lot of boat dealers in Portland. Think I'll check with them on the rubber terminal covers, and keep looking online......

On the pump, I can't tell it that goofy threaded post is threaded in, or pressed in. There's literally nothing sticking out to get ahold of with a pair of needle nose pliers or such..... It broke off fairly flush with the part of the pump it's screwed or pressed into..... I'll look at it more closely tomorrow..... Had to be a riding lawn mower mechanic for awhile tonight..... :icon_rolleyes: At least I'll be able to cut my grass now, someday, if it ever quits raining here......

Thanks guys!!!!

Finally some Closure....

For a little bit of "Closure" on this "Ham Fisted Bonehead Moment" I had while weatherproofing my new electric fuel pump:

I bought my Carter P74221 fuel pump(s) from a place called autopartstomorrow.com ( www.autopartstomorrow.com ). They sell these SD direct rplacement pumps for $106.92, shipped. If they hold up for awhile, it might make it a good deal for someone simply wanting an electric pump system, like me.....

Anyway, the first one I screwed up after having it plumbed in & running after only 4-5 days or so. I was wanting to weatherproof the exposed electrical connections, and inadvertently snapped off the positive electrical stud/post/terminal. Had to buy a new pump, as Carter/Federal Mogul doesn't fix them. But Carter told me to try sending it back to the place where I bought it, and tell them it was defective. This was after I'd already admitted it was my fault.... :icon_rolleyes:

Called up autopartstomorrow.com and told them the same story. The lady I spoke to on the phone talked to her supervisor, and got an OK to send it back as a defective pump. I'm supposed to get my money back, but I'm not certain when that'll happen. The pump is still in transit from Oregon to Georgia......

So if they're good on their word about refunding my money, it should be about as good of an ending to this deal as I could've hoped for.

Also, if anyone cares, I found a source for the "Vinyl Terminal Insulaters" I was looking for, in Michigan. www.vteworld.com is where I found them. I got the model #212, at .48 cents each. The only problem is that they have a $15 minimum order. I only needed 4 of them, so got hosed for $13 worth of shipping on the pukey little things..... I kept striking out on local suppliers like marine dealers, NAPA, CarQuest & such.....

Hope this might help someone!
