I have a 2001 f350 crew cab super duty 7.3l with 75000 miles. Due to my lifestyle Im looking at trading in for a 2004 f350 dually crew cab super duty 6.0l 70000 miles completely stock and hasnt been chipped. I have heard that the 6L was new to the rig and replaced the 7.3 in 2003. Wondering if its a good trade. Was that 2004 being the first year of that 6.0L a safe bet or should I not do the trade in. Desperate need of advice. Thanks for looking.

2003 was the first year for the 6.0 - first quarter was the 7.3, then they switched (and its been downhill ever since....)

You have a 7.3 that is barely broken in and you want to trade into a vehicle that is going to take thousands and thousands of dollars to make it half as reliable as the one you are in. I wouldn't suggest it unless you are a masochist with a large bank account. Here's a thread from the 6.0 forum about just one of the things you'll need to do:

Then, you'll need head studs and a FICM rebuild, and more and more - remember that show, "money pit"?

The term 6.0 Leaker, really does have some bearing, in this situation. The early ones were extremely bad. The latter ones, Ford and Navistar did make some improvements.

I would not own an 03, 04, or early 05; 6.0 liter, even if it was given to me. I would figure out a way to put my 7.3 in there. They did make the 7.3 available in the 04 Super Duties, that went offshore. So, it can be done.
