Hello Everyone. I just purchased an 04 F350. This is the first diesel pickup I have owned. I am familiar with the Dirtymax and Cummins but have no clue when it comes to the powerstroke. From what I have heard, the head gasket is a major problem among many others. Basically, I want to do some preventative mods. I am looking for some suggestions on exhaust, programmers I live in ny and inspections are very thorough.

recommendations are usually 4" turbo back exhaust, and a SCT xcal3 with custom tunes from innovative diesel, and dont forget your gauges, boost, egt, trans temp.

headgaskets go usually when people tune their trucks and dont monitor egt's, etc.

Preventative, would be delete EGR, ARP stud it, sct tune, 4" exhaust.

There are a lot of posts on this so you might want to search them. But unless you are planning on replacing your head bolts to studs I would not tune your 6.0l. There might be some debate on this but the 6.0 was tuned by ford to make quite a bit more power than its International brother and its at its operating limit stock when it comes to its head bolts. The 6.0 has a long history of blowing head gaskets when pushed past stock levels. I'm a big 6.0 fan and it will treat you right if left stock and serviced regularly....jmo

I am going to go with the MBRP 4" turboback keeping the cat and considering the and maxmileage tune from quadzilla.......any opinions on the egr? Will the max mileage tune increase my chances of blowing the headgasket?

Delete that EGR and you will get nailed at inspection time, if the NY inspections are that thorough. I agree with CZDiesel's advice; keep your truck stock, change fluids and filters regularly and this 6.0 will be okay.

I'm a CTD guy at heart, and this 6.0 has been fighting me since day one, but now that I've learned how to take care of it, it does its job, it just gets way sh!tty MPGs, compared to the CTD.

When my warranty's up, and the truck's paid off, it's going up to Autoworld in MT for a CTD transplant.

3.5" downpipe... 4" downpipe looses too much bottom end power and can rub on the fire wall.

MBRP is a good exhaust but do not get the quadzilla... the only way to go on a 6.0L is a custom tuned SCT with innovative tunes.... trust the people on the site...most have started with a generic tuner like the quadzilla, edge, ect and have stepped up to custom tunes because they are honestly better and will help keep your transmission alive longer...

gauges are also a must with any tuner so that should be on before you put the tuner on...

if you have any other questions feel free to ask

I ordered a magnaflow 4" turbo back and an S&B cold air. I ditched the MBRP idea so I could have a little quieter ride. I am still up in the air about the programmer, this is the first F.O.R.D. I have ever owned so I am really scared of blowing it up:jester: I was not aware that diesel trucks are not hooked to the NYS inspection computer during inspection. Obtaining a sticker will not be a problem.

Raul, thanks for the input on the programmer. I will do what you suggest if I do put one in. What I meant when I said up in the air was I do think I am going to put one in the truck at all

i still think a custom tuned SCT with gauges is your best bet... do a search on here and other forums like powerstroke.org and you will see that the majority of people that are tuning a 6.0L are doing custom tunes....

they are far superior to anything you can buy off the shelf and will tune your transmission way better...
