my 99 f-250 7.3 acted like the batt. was dead the last couple of times i tried to start! I thought it was probably a bad conn. the last time i tried to start i smelled elect smoke not alot just a little from pasenger side seen it as well! it was drag-n liike said couple of times but then started with no prob until last time, after charging batt still no start??? any body know if solenoid on starter might be bad and if so how much they run??? never heard any probs with starter?? thanks for your help hoot14 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif <font color="blue"> </font>

hoot, if your batteries are weak they will burn up the starter over time. You may possibly have a bad starter now, also I would get the batteries checked and if one is even marginal I would replace them both. How old are they? What CCA?
Starters are not cheap for these trucks, as nothing is!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Pull it and get it checked out too at a motor shop. Do you have those? I have one near me that will rebuild starters. (They used to be all over the place.. now most people wont bother getting them rebuilt, they just go buy a reman one.) Parts stores may also be able to check the starter.

i just replaced them both around 1st week of november from oreillys cant recall but there the big ones and i believe i wasnt getting a good connection im just wondering if i burnt a wire from fenderwall (solenoid) to starter ii checked conn on starter they were not loose!! I also crossed solenoid with screwdriver and it was clicking from starter area! thought there might be an inline fuse in between???? thanks jimtjr i will keep probing
