First thing this morning I went out to start my truck. It started like normal. After a min it went into high idle like it always does when it is cold (22 degrees this morning). All of a sudden it started romping pretty bad. I went outside and tapped the brake to bring the idle down. Still romping I give it a little pedal and it was skipping pretty hard. So left it and drove the stang. came home from work tonight and changed cps no difference. Unplugged the new icp I put in no difference. It has no check engine light. Did all the tests my scanner can do and passed all but the contribution test, but it hasnt passed that since ive owned it, shows #8. As I was doing the tests and the temp was coming up it started to smooth out but not perfect and it took a while. Had it running while romping or skipping and checked codes (even though it had no light), came up with p1280 integrated control panel circuit out of range low. I cleared it and tried it again and couldnt get it to come up again but the romping had started to stop.
Dont know if this is related or not but the other morning when i was driving the back pressure valve sounded like it was trying to close let off the throttle and it would open back on throttle it would close, truck was not bone cold but not completely warm.
sorry about the long post but just trying to give as much info as possible to hopefully help you help me. Thanks for your time and knowledge

Try plugging in the block heater. My truck was getting the romps and I switched to rotella 5w40 syn and cured the problem. If you are due for a oil change worth a try. Might have an issue with the ipr as well. Can you monitor ICP pressure? The 1280 was probably from unplugging the icp sensor.

i can monitor icp pressure, but with the way it is running I cant drive it even when it quit romping so bad it still had a bit of a skip. It is also taking alot longer to start. I am close to the time for oil change and fuel filter change(i change fuel filter every 10000 miles and oil every 5000 miles)

Can you do a buzz test? Also might be worth getting a gauge and looking at fuel pressure. You can measure it on the back of the fuel bowl. Here is a link to the adapter: Fuel Pressure Gauge Adapter - 7.3L FORD

Change your oil. Romping is usually a symptom of used-up oil (among other things).
If that doesn't cure it, it may be related to the IPR being balky when cold. That's a function of oil temp, which is why it smoothed out as it warmed up.

if the oil change doesnt take care of it. then what would be the next thing. would needing an oil change cause it to crank over alot longer before it starts? is the exhaust back pressure situation related or most likely not. if not any ideas. thanks

If you don't build up around 500psi your injectors won't fire Not sure if this is the problem but I would rule it out.

So I should put my scanner on it and try to start and watch icp pressure? Change oil and do it again to compare? It has never done this before and I have gone over a couple hundred miles. I guess there are a lot of variables to the oil life. What do you recomend as far as oil change intervals.

ok i checked my oil it was low. topped it off and no more romp-go figure. it still takes alot of cranking for it to start. will changing the oil make a difference in the long starts.
