If you go to remove your air filter and you can't get the lid off, that is because the "soup bowl" is in the way. So you have to move the entire air filter housing outward in order to get the lid off.

So, you flip the lid over, get a 5/16 spot weld drill bit. I think it's 5/16. You drill the spot welds and pop the bowl off. Clean up the welds with a small grinder or die grinder. Hit the bare metal with some paint. In case you drilled through the lid, you can mig weld the hole.

Whatever you do, don't drill holes in your air filter housing. All that will accomplish is to allow hot engine compartment air into your engine. Some guys have made a homemade "ram air" with a dryer vent hose. They would punch out a hole in the radiator support on the drivers side, and adapt that dryer hose at both ends. Tim

My experience is that the removal of the SouP Bowl does only 1 thing, makes it easier to remove the A/F cover.
I installed a K&N at the same time, and did not notice any improvement to mileage or power.

Others may have another story!

Good Luck
By the way, I figured 18.74 MPG on the last fill, ($66.83USD)

Why not go to the local wreckers and get a van air cleaner cover, they don't have a soup bowl. This would save destroying the one on your truck only to find out it does not do much for performance and increases cab noise.

This info I have gleaned from the many who said it does nothing, if you undo the air cleaner box and remove the whole thing there is no problem, how many times do you remove the air filter in a year anyway.
