I'm just not sure if yours came with shims or not. I've done tons of starters on many different vehicles and it seems like they all come with shims, and that's only if you try to start it and it binds and doesn't move at all, that's where the shims come in. There is a possibilty I guess that the gear reduction starter might be going past the flywheel and spinning. If you can, have someone turn the key while you take a look, but I don't think you'll see much, and I don't know if your manual has an inspection cover like my auto does. Wear safety glasses though, just to be on the safe side.

Look in the yellow pages for an auto-electric shop and give them a call, and take both your starters in and have them checked.

If the armature isn't bad on the old one, they might be able to rebuild it fairly quickly to get you back on the road.

Shop I go to has a few already in stock, one I brought in was shot and he just pulled one off the shelf.

'91s came with a Mitsubitshi gear reduction starter, and like most all Ford products, no shims involved.

I didn't think so. I'd just go have it checked out.

those clamp on ones worked for me.make sure you get the right size one for the size of cable.i went with the cheaper one and when i went to install it the cable was to fat for the clamp and had to trim some of the cable off.should have paid the extra $2 for the right clamp.measure twice cut once.are you still having a hard time starting the truck

I would advise against the clamp-on terminals. Those things are a magnet for corrosion/crappy connection.

Still having problems had the batteries checked cause i thought that was the problem the batteries are fine, altinator is new regulator is new, starter relay is new (all about a week) it was running, I started it 2 days ago it was below freezing but didnt push the go pedal to set the fast idle it started right away ran for abot 20 seconds (a little rough) and stalled went to restart it and it just barely turned over I thought it was batteries, starter was replaced in april of last year, tried to get it started last night with a booster and my buddys truck when I tried to crank it his headlamps got really dull the thig was drawing so much (it was a dakota not a diesel) so am getting a new starter under warranty this morning as I said before I was supposed to be in cali at the ranch 2 days ago dont need it breaking down on the interstate or at a truck stop somewhere, thats why im thinking of replacing the battery terminals too, just to cover all my bases, the trip from here to the ranch is about 900 miles. thanks everyone any other input would be really appreciated.:ford:

I had new ends put on at the same shop where I had my starter looked at. The center clamp was still good so we just did the two ends on the power wire. It's a little short now, so If I ever have them done again I'll need a new power wire.

Check you ground wires too, unless you've already done so.

Have you retested the ALT.

FYI always use the "91 year" starter style....... never use the newer ones as they will not work for long and could damage the ring gear.
