I know posts like this get posted all the time but after a quick search I didn't really find anything that included all the information I need. Quick background- I'm in the heavy equipment business, I pull everything from equipment (dozers, mini excavators, skid steers, etc) to sod to concrete to dump trailers full of who knows what. Sometimes I will go several months without pulling sometimes it's a daily activity. My transmission just went out and given the local shop's reputation combined with my experience I'm looking into buying either a reman or a performance transmission. The truck is a 2000 F350 SRW 4x4 diesel. For the most part the truck is not for pulling but I didn't want to leave that out because I don't hesitate to hook to a trailer when I need to. I need opinions on what to buy, factory reman or performance; what brand; do I need to buy any add ons? And if there is anything I have left out that you think I should be aware of please feel free.

Thanks for the advice,
Pat

You are a prime candidate for a BTS transmission - he replaces all the components known to fail with ultra heavy duty parts. Word is you get a lifetime warranty. The two things you will need are a 6.0 cooler (which comes with the BTS rebuild) and a transmission temperature gauge (in addition to the dash mounted idiot gauge) - then you're set for life.

Considering that Brian rebuilds them for free and you can see THIS thread about a local expert, I think the answer is a no brainer.

I guess the decision is in: Brian's Truck Stop from somewhere around Flippen, AR.
His reputation on this Forum is stellar. He gets triple top dollar for his services, but VALUE is not necessarily the lowest price. And, you even get a handshake warranty that's plenty good.

I too was in the heavy equipment business before retiring, and smaller track excavators and skidsteer loaders are within your pulling ability.

I would think twice about pulling a 17K lb. dozer on a 5K lb. trailer with anything with less than a true mid-size truck with duals. Remember, you've got to be able to stop that monster. Duals don't necessarily mean they'll carry more load--but that you have a backup tire in case of a tire failure.
