After having my truck shut off once a few months ago, and then "hiccup" the day after, I finally changed out my CPS last weekend and filled up.

I filled up at the same station, drove the same style and came up with these results:

Last tank with Old CPS: 13.04 MPG
Old CPS average over last 5 tanks: 13.98 MPG (highest was 14.75, lowest 13.04)

Average since I bought the truck in November: 13.11 MPG, highest ever was 15.49 MPG

1st tank with new CPS: 17.34 MPG

I've only got one tank of fuel on the new CPS so I might be crying wolf, but it seems to have improved. This is a bone stock truck, safe for a set of 295/75/16 BFG All Terrains.

Anyone else experience this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I haven't actually calculated my mileage but Ive been through about 4 tanks since I replaced my CPS with the new one and I am getting about 50 more mile to a tank now.

I don't know why this is either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Well maybe I'll change mine out and see what happens! Mine is still the 2002 original.

Please keep me posted on this....As you burn fuel and compile the results will you post them or shoot me a quick PM if its not too much to ask?

Thanks

I actually kinda makes sense. CPS going out, engine not running as efficient as it should, makes the engine waork harder. Engine working harder = more fuel burned.

I experienced a drop in fuel mileage with the first CPS that ever failed in our trucks. It was in the 1999 truck and the truck was doing the hiccup thing. I didn't know what it was at the time and drove it for a really long time like that. Before the truck had the CPS problem I always got around 500 miles out of a full tank of fuel. When the CPS was in the process of failing, I had several tanks where I only got around 400 miles out of it. Once the CPS was replaced, the truck went back up to 500 miles on a tank.

Isn't the CPS and counter? It simply sends a signal to the PCM and tells it the truck is running, I fail to see how this can increase mpg. Can you say PLACEBO?
I just changed mine out but the CPS I used was about 3 years old but still new, I ordered two from Bob, maybe I will swap them out and enjoy 20mpg out of my dually?

It's possible a new CPS could send a "cleaner" signal to the PCM and thus bring the mileage back to where it was before. I don't see how the new model CPS could raise the mileage above the norm for the truck. With that said, if it proves out I'd spend $30 to get 2-3 mpg increase. I have two old model spares behind my seat, but for more mileage I'd buy one more.

I've had a spare in my trucks glove box for some time..

I'll change mine out and post the findings...

Nothing else, I'll still have a spare that I know works....

CPS inputs control timing and ICP values, its a lot more than just a counter.

Is it possible your change in fuel mileage has come from a change in seasons? In winter time you are running #1 fuel which gets us worse fuel economy. Spring/Summer is here and your back to running #2 so your mileage has gone back up....

Kanman, I would tend to agree, but my previous tank of fuel was #2 as well, and probably the two tanks before that too.

Like I eluded to, I might be imagining things, but the numbers have improved. The truck doesn't run any differently or have more power. I'll keep an eye on the mileage and see how it goes. I've got some hauling to do this weekend if everything goes according to plan.

I just filled up halfway as I have a trip coming up on Friday and managed 14.5mpg on the last tank of mixed driving. Seems to be only slightly better than before, but still better.

I'm going to put on roughly 600 miles on Friday, I'll post back how it performs.

In the winter we run Blended #2 not #1.

And yes the CPS can help mileage if the old one is bad and timing or injection are effected then yes there can be a loss in mileage from a junk sensor.

In some cases as the sensor ages the signal gradually gets worse not all CPS's have a catastrophic failure some just start to get crappy.

When I changed mine I saw a 1 mpg increase last year with the old style seonsor. A cleaner signal simply means a more precise injection cycle.

If we could get the same power/mileage injecting fuel anywhere in the injection cycle we wouldn't need a CPS in the first place.

Agree that it can help with start ups and MPG.
Another observation of the new -B grey sensor.
1- Its no longer sealed on the tip.(2 epox holes).
2- The diameter of the sensor after the o-ring towards the cam gear is much smaller.(it makes the target smaller).

Just a question- Did you drive to the exact places at the exact times of the days at the exact outside temperature in identical traffic hitting the same lights? Are you hand figuring or using the overhead computer?

There are just to many factors that affect MPG to make a claim like this. Unless the exact identical driving conditions are the same it cannot be said one is better than the other. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif It's like saying " Boy my Mickey Thompsons sure do get 5 more MPG than my old BFGs " without stating that you only drove in stop and go traffic with the BFGs in 110* heat and nothing but highway with the MTs @ 70*. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Depends 100% on where you buy it. We dont get half as cold down here in Kansas as you guys do up there, but I can show ya three or four truck stops with in 100 miles of here that will sell you straight number 1.

My CPS crapped out shortly before or after you started this post, and ya know what... My truck is getting slightly better fuel mileage since my CPS change. Seeing is believing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif I honestly don't know if the CPS is the cause of the mileage increase. But, I have also been running nearly 100% Bio Diesel lately, and my mileage SHOULD be going down, but it has gone up. What ever has caused it, I sure hope it continues.

I'm hand calculating all this, and I'm not driving at the same time of day and hitting the same lights, don't be ridiculous. I can't control the weather either (imagine that!) The driving is similar to what I do every time I drive the truck.

Next tank of fuel (unloaded): 17.31mpg

Towing 7500lbs: 13.15mpg
