I went and topped off the tank today after returning yesterday from my 600 mile round trip Lake Powell trip.

The good news: 613 miles, averaging about 70 mph the whole way, I used 49.69 gallons which averages out to 12.33 mpg hand calculated of course. The onboard computer said 12.3 so for once it was actually accurate. By the way, that 49.69 gallons cost me $155.41. Just over $3.00 per gallon average. I thought I came out alright as my buddy with the v10 Excursion only got about 7.5 mpg and he uses mid grade premium! His fuel bill was about $100 more than mine!

The bad news: When topping it off today it appears that I have fuel leaking from the TOP of the tank. I usually top it right off till its almost overflowing out of the filler tube and today I felt diesel fuel splattering at my feet before it got to the top of the filler tube and looked underneath and its coming from about mid tank, somewhere on the top. Any ideas? Loose hose clamp hopefully?

I once had a plastic tank that a bolt wore thru...I hope that is not the case here.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Thanks!
Randy

Sounds like a connection is loose either supply to the pump, or return from the motor, If it goes away when you start your engine, it is probably supply to the pump, bad news is if it ain't leaking it is sucking air. You need to drop the tank to fix it. Good time to do the pre-pump and Harpoon mods. Look here for good instructions with pics.

Use a couple of ratcheting straps to lower and raise the tank. Much easier than floor jacks.
