Lets start at the beginning. I yanked the heads so i could get the glow plugs out, while out i had the heads redone. Simple valve job, new seals, and heads checked for squarness. All good. Had the pump and injectors rebuilt at DPS. Slaped it all back together, with a set of headers from Stans headers. Cranked it over with the glow plugs out till fuel was spraying out of the hole , replace glow plugs and she fired right up.
NOW here's the problem, when running she sounds ok, clattering like any good running diesel will. BUT there is this noise that it keeps makeing. The noise sounds like a sprinkler , the type that sprays a streight stream till a small arm hits it and the head swivles about 20 degrees, and the arm backs away , only to come back around and hit the stream again, kinda like SSSsspppii SSSsssppii.
So its runing, at idle for about 20 sec or so and you will hear from the intake, no air cleaner on, faint at first then louder and louder, then back quiter and quiter, ssppii ssppii Ssppii SSppii SSPPII SSppii Ssppii ssppii, for about 5 to 10 sec then when its gone it seems to do it in the exhust. With open headers remember, for about the same amount of time 5-10 sec then it will stop for about 5-10 sec. then start all over again at the intake. Total time about 30sec. If you run the engine at 2000 rpm it will still do it just faster because its running faster.
Things i have tried, new fuel filter, no change. Adj the timeing no differance. I wait till the noise starts I have cracked the hard line going to one injector, no pres. the injector should not work, fuel leaking, the engine stumbleing becuse one cyl. not getting fuel, and no difference, tighten the hard line and the engine smooths out. Have done that to all 8 No differance still makes the noise. Tried adding a bottle of Sea Foam and Marvils Marvins to the crank case oil, maybe a stuck check ball in a lifter that wont bleed down, ran for 1/2 hr. no change. Rechecked the hard lines going from the pump to injecetor for fireing order, all correct. The truck sat for 6months befor i had time to pull the heads. The vally looked really clean for a truck with 250K no sludge.
I called Ken at DPS he thought it might be a the last thing i listed , stuck check ball, and didnt think it was a pump or injector.
Other then the SSppiii sound it runs fine, havent road tested but it sounds like a good old Big BLock when you crack open the throttle. Idles fine starts fine, any ideas on what to check next?

I would not be suprised if it were the pump or the injectors from DPS. That dude is not very smart and he is good a screwing people just ask freddyfast about his DPS nightmare. The lifter would have more of a chatter than a sprinkler sound IMHO.

Mine dose not have the serpentine belt system. When i went to DPS to get my pump, he hadnt even sentout OR rebuilt mine, SO he opend a box and exchanged my pump & injectors for the set that just came in. IF he dose bad work on modify stuff,, hopfully mine is fine.

I am going to go to the head rebuilder do find out if when they ground down the valves seats if it could make them to long. It seems like once running one set gets hot, and the length is to long and dosnt seal, then cools off and seals. Maybe thats why it keeps comeing and going. Dose anyone know if they make a shim kit fo the rockers?

There are AERA (American Engine Rebuilders) specs or Navistar specs same info..... get the shop to check things out....Did they do vacuum, pressure tests etc.

Did they dress/shave the head faces.......there is a minimum deck height, yes when the valves are reground then they must be checked for depth in the head plus height of stem protrusion and ground/adjusted etc.

If your using the old rocker assemblies did you check them for worn out rocker posts. Also if you used old rocker with circles on the pushrod faces it will chip holes in the new valve tops........how do I know don't ask /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
