Charles,
With all do respect, spend some time reading the board. This comes up often. If you check out the aftermarket section you will find more info than your pocketbook can handle. Some mods require supporting mods, and others are the best bang for the buck. Power and cheap on a 7.3 does not happen easy, expect close to $1000 for a tuner, all the gauges, air filter, and exhaust. Atleast that much if you have to pay to have it installed. You can spend anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand. I spent $750 on my edge with attitude and edge evolution, and that was a good deal at the time. Gauges cost around $300 depending on what you want.
I spend would spend your first few hundred on changing all fluids and filters if you do not know the history of the truck.

Start reading about Dp-tuner, and then research the supporting mods you will need.

Charles, Sky down Buddy!! This question has been asked many times. And I can agree that it's pretty cool to see a PSD blowin coal out the tail pipe. If thats all you want to do then the easiest and cheapest way is to open up the air box, go down to your local landscape shop and purchase some of the finest sand you can find, dump it in a blow smoke. Just kidding  But if you plan to keep this truck and want to make it perform, you really should research your mods, save your pennies and purchase reliable products. There is a free/cheap mod to get smoke(posted in the FAQ of Upgrades and Aftermarket) on this site. But personally I wouldn't do it. Up to you. Take your time, ask lots of questions, use the best products you can get and you will be much happier in the end.
Oh by the way....Welcome to the forum!!!

The cheapest and quickest way to black smoke is a clogged air filter...

Charles,

There is more to these trucks than blowing black smoke. Unfortunately the guys who have enjoyed running down the street rollin coal are going to ruin it for everyone here in the near future, in all actuality it has started with the new Diesels on the market.. Like previous posts have said, do some research and find the most reliable parts to put on your truck. I would first start of with some gauges, then intake and exhaust, and a chip can be thrown in at that time. Yes it is fun if u have to get on it and blow some black smoke, but these trucks are defintiely a lot more than that. good luck with whatever direction u wanna go.
