Hi all,

Just purchased a new F350 diesel to use as my everyday vehicle and for towing my 5th wheel camper.

I'm curious to get thoughts on how often I should be using the Exhaust Brake with this truck.

I'm assuming that I would pretty much engage it whenever I'm towing my camper and let it activate when it needs to. Does that sound right?

Should I also try to engage it a few times over the winter when I would not be towing just in order to "clean" things out some? Heard somebody mention that in regards to a different manufacturer and wondering if that made any sense or not here.

Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

Anytime I tow the EB is on. I start the truck, hit T/H and then turn the EB on. When I'm unloaded, I don't turn either on, no point in having the EB on when unloaded as it won't do much for you.

Im like blwnsmoke,I do however use it while in regen as it helps mine due to the short trip I have from the house to work...

What do you mean by "Regen"?

I work from home a lot of days and so my daily driving is also usually very short. When I travel for work then it's more like a couple hundred miles once or week or so in the winter. That's why I was wondering if it was needed to be used to keep it cleaned out or whatever. Sounds like that's probably not the case.

As Blwnsmoke, whenever the fiver is hooked up, I hit T/H and EB buttons. It helps for all stopping, not just downhill slowing.
I hadn't thought about using it during regen, but I don't do short trips.

DPF regeneration is the process of cleaning the particulate filter by injecting diesel fuel into the exhaust which heats the exhaust system to between 1000 and 1200 degrees to turn the soot into ash. This can happen at anywhere from 150 to 500 or so miles, depending on your driving. Short trips builds soot faster, interstate driving for 30 miles or so slows the soot rate and towing heavy keeps the exhaust hot enough to cause passive regen (elimination of soot without an active regen described above).
Although you may see a 2-3 second flash on the dash of Exhaust Cleaning in Progress, the process actually lasts 16-30 miles on my truck. Active regen on the 2015-16 is about every 500 miles whether it is full of soot or not.
Read the Diesel Supplement that came with the truck.

Mine is on all the time...it helps a tremendous amount in slowing the truck and saving brakes. Part of my drive to work is somewhat downhill for some disrance at 45 mph, with EB on, I roll at a nice 45, while everyone else around me rides brakes.

If I remember correctly you have a tuner on yours. Do you still use the TowHaul mode plus the Exhaust brake button while your tuner is set in the Tow mode???

Yes, the tune is a daily driver and doesn't engage T/H automatically. It is basically a street tune with limitations to protect the drive train while towing.

Thanks, do you use that mode for your DD or only while towing? If not what mode do you use for your DD?
Sorry to be so nosey but I'm real close on pulling the trigger on the 5STAR tunes with the SCT livewire TS+...
