Good day all,

I am new to this forum, but perhaps many can lend your insight in my endeavors and I too contribute to others.

Background:
I'm a chemist, I work for (__X__ Automotive Chemical Lab). located here in the central Midwest. I understand chemistry, specifications, and applications of automotive oils and fuels. Not overly familiar with hard part interchanges, electrical systems, and such.

Currently:
2002 Ford F250 4x4 crew cab 7.3L standard bed. airbag assisted rear suspension. 245,000 miles
Purchased this truck last fall as a no-start with the understanding that I may have to put a motor in it.Not a hail dent on the thing. trailered it home in my friends new 6.7L easy as pie. Previous owner ((truck used as escort vehicle for wind turbine/oilfield operations, poor maintenance schedule, aftermarket K&N cold air intake, significant blow-by...exc.))
Troubleshoot and diagnose truck, remove and clean regulator for high pressure oil system, truck comes alive. Ran, drive, for a few months. slight smoke at times.
Drove to savannah GA through tropical storm Hermine for a wedding. On way back, stop in Tennessee 2 qts low on stick....hmm add 2 qts. get to Kansas City 2qts low on stick...hmm add 2 qts (please Lord just need to get home), Been driving for a crazy number of hours, let my uncle drive and take a nap. Wake up, still on the highway but near home, uncle driving with check engine light on, nearly out of fuel and oil pressure dropping, significant smoke...**** pull over!
Oil covered backside of engine, transmission, down frame all over the underside...****. Add fuel and 4 qts oil at fuel station just need to get home. Truck runs more poorly than it already did,,,idiot uncle....
Research- tracking down oil leak from backside of engine/turbo area, many say that the pedestal seals often go out. Remove, clean and replace new seals in turbo pedestal. Drive some more, no improvement on oil leak. Open pedestal for round 2, again clean up and replace seals reassemble (assumed human error first time). Drive some more, leak persists. Use borescope while running and determine the source of the leak ---> Exhaust Back Pressure Valve in turbo pedestal leaking drip,...drip,....drip...
EBPV rebuild kit- $200, or EBPV delete kit -$120, new deleted pedestal and respective turbo fitting installed. Truck drives, smokes horribly no oil leak but the damage may have already been done....

Finally got some funds together and dropped it off for rebuild but I've got a few trucks ahead of me in line. I don't plan to have another truck for many years to come. I intend this to be a family, light to medium towing truck for long trips.

So I need some insight for the rebuild.
1) not looking to max out HP, prefer a solid fuel efficient build for many years to come. So what "DO" or must I need on the rebuild? studs/injectors/turbo/cam/pistons/crank/rods
2) want to update the rest of the truck as well in time
a) transmission (economy towing)
b) Front end (08 front clip fit?)
c) suspension (not looking to lift)
d) Interior (dash, saw a youtube of a guy with a 2001 with 2010 dash?)
e) Thoughts on gear vendors/6 door conversions/plow-winch bumpers???

Thank you if you made it through all that.

I doubt you need a rebuild or even any major work. Sounds like an injector oring blew. Not a big deal. I would do a compression test and if that is ok, put a set of orings in. Check your fuel filter. If an oring blew, the filter may be stained black.

With as bad as the blow-by is, it may have ring issues or a cracked piston? Haven't been able to check for fuel in the oil. It has a crappy K/N air filter and 245k miles on it with a poor history of maintenance.

I didn't see your reference to blow by. How bad is it? If you turn the fill cap upside down on the fill tube, is it bad enough to blow the cap off?

Yes it is significant, The amount of smoke produced does not decline after warmup either.
